My friend Joe wants to open an Italian restaurant which will also serve many varieties of pizza and he needs to come up with a great, catchy name.

Anyone have any great ideas on names? Forget the "Joe's Restaurant", that's so boring...!

What is your unique selling proposition? It needs to be worked into your name and logo. If you don't know what I'm talking about, read my post on this thread:

Search USP and you'll find many more detailed posts.

Some things I don't think are important:
* The owners name, unless you are selling personal relationships as your USP instead of something else. A name that says "Italian" however, let's your customers know you serve Italian food.
* The location
* The word "restaurant", assuming your name already implies "restaurant" or some type of food, like pizza
* Creative names. While it's good to be exciting, creativity for creativity's sake is just plain confusing to your customers. The effectiveness of many good names and logos have been ruined by artists or business persons who were more worried about creativity than effectiveness.

Things that are important:
* Implying or flat out saying "pizza" in the name, so your customers know what you serve
* Conveying the style of service through the name. Don't choose a fancy name for a quick service restaurant, and vice versa
* Keep it short. It's harder to remember long names than short ones.
* Use familiar words. Unless it's based on a familiar word, don't use some creative word no one has heard of. Your customers won't be able to remember it which limits referrals and even repeat business.

Every one of these rules has exceptions. These are just good rules of thumb.

Most importantly, remember your name and logo have to brand these three things into the minds of your customers:
1) Who you are
2) What you do (sell)
3) What your USP is
