here's what I've done in the past, this way you won't feel rude. Tell everyone your raffling off a DVD or something like that, 10-15 bucks into the DVD, charge like $5 per raffle with 15 or so people you should get most of your cash back. If not a raffle have a 50/50 drawing.

Timing is everything. I think if you talk up the idea of everyone chipping in before you actually invite people then it would be fine. But if you have already invited people it's kind of too late. As someone else has already suggested, ask if people can help out with bringing a dish or chips or ice or drinks and cut some of the cost that way.

Nope, just ask when you invite to pitch in, they know that this fight is costing some bucks, I don't think they'd mind paying $5 for it vs. $50. Even if they go to a bar there is a charge $5-10. Don't feel rude. You might even host more fights if they pitch in too.

YES!!! It would be rude. You could suggest to them to bring drinks or whatever as compensation, but if you are going to host a party you should expect absolutely nothing from guests except for their company.

The only way to ask them to chip in without being rude, is to ask that they provide some sort of beverage or dessert, or some sort of game. Yes, it would be very rude to ask them to pay any money.

Yes it is rude. Proper way is to charge Admission and the more you charge the more people will think it was great. If, you give something for free or ask for money, people think it cheap. BUT, when you charge for it, they will believe it is Worth the money. Cars are a good example of this, more you pay, better it is.

I don't think it's rude. We used to do it all the time and my friends would chip in like $5 a person.

If they are "guests", then yes.
If you say, "Hey, wanna come watch the fights at my house? Ten bucks and I provide the food!" then no.
It's okay to be poor, just don't spring financial demands on people expecting to be treated as guests ... that is to say "treated".

It is never tactful to ask for money. I would suggest maybe having potluck where your guests can all bring a dish
