It seems flat to me. However, when I peer intently at lines of clouds over a real-long horizon I detect a curl this way and that, like it's following some sort of curvature of the surface in a distant kind of way. It's really spooky. But you include the question "Was it ever round?" So if you want more on the subject, listen to Phil Hendrie on xm radio channel 152, and sometimes he has a guest General Johnson Jameson, who attempts such inquiries. As an added bonus, a few conversations about a society of small people who live in a magical land.

you cannot understand the sphericity of the earth unless u travel up into the sky and find for your self.
But through indirect observation you can understand the sphericity of the earth
here are some of the examples

1. if u start moving in certain fixed direction around the earth - u will certainly come back to the point where you have started
2. See the approaching ship from the coast , first you will see the highest part of the ship then other parts. Had earth been flat you 'd have seen whole of the ship at the first instant.
3.If you observe the lunar ecclipse (which is formed due to earth coming in between sun and moon, earth blocking the sun rays reaching moon ) the shadow fromed on the moon is curved at the ends - that is the edge of earth.
4.Photographs taken from satellites show earth as spherical object
5.if u weigh an object in spring balance- its weight ( depends on gravitational pull of the earth) remains roughly the same ( subjected to minor gravity corrections)at all places on the earth. This is possible only if the earth is sphere.
6.Measure the position of north star from the equator - move towards pole - for every 111 km - u observe 1 degree rise of north star .. so at poles it is almost at 90 degrees . This is possible is the earth is sphere.

If this was the case, why would we need to launch space shuttles, wouldn't we just go to the end of the earth and jump? No one on record has ever fallen off of either end of the earth. You have to consider gravity but if this floats your boat. . .

You probably should have asked "Who agrees that the earth is flat?" You can't ask why something is until you can proove that it is. A map is man made just like a globe. It's not any more proof of the world being flat than a photo is proof of a person being flat.

The map is a reproduction of the globe...Let me explain like my teacher did: The man who reproducted the map is like a man who cuts an watermellon vertically.
Every slice is now put on a blank page. Because the Earth is ROUND, some blankspaces are between 2 slices. Understood?

the earth is always round, like a ball. don't rely on a map to decide that the earth is flat. you might want to justify that because we live on a flat surface and no matter how far we will walk, we will never fall off over the "edge" because it's like we are walking above a very big ball. then there is this thing called gravity that pulls us to the surface that's why we don't fall. you really serious?

haha its round. the maps made are made from cartographers who sort of took a globe and flattened it out onto a sheet. its their job. the google earth globe shape is correct. there are many different types maps that are made. but i dont think the earth was ever flat unless there was some type of theory....

There's different projections of maps to show the Earth. Earth is usually portrayed as flat on maps for it is easiest to use for navigation. The downside to all projections is they have some sort of distortion. for example, the most come projection is the Mercator projection, which shows the poles of the earth as being much bigger or longer than they actually are.

Earth is round. and about the map, it is only the flat presentation of surface for better understanding.

The Earth is rond and is spherical in shape. The world can't be shown round on paper,so they show it as flat.I am amazed can you just imagine a flat earth.
