The answer lies in the definition of the word "Purse". True the word means a woman's handbag, but it also has other meanings including the total prize money to be awarded in a sporting event. example>>"The total purse in the XYZ golf tournament was one million dollars, with the winner getting a half million and the other finishers dividing the rest."

Jerry Seinfeld said his problem was that the men in shorts were fighting for... a belt! Why not give the winner trousers? And a shirt? And his other problem is that they have no prior arguement, no reason to hit each other. He said put them in pedal cars, going round and round in the ring, it's difficult to drive with the gloves on, there'll be an accident, and then some road-rage!

Yeah, you're right. There is nothing macho about this hideous thing they call the Noble Sport. It's all about money and nothing else. As to the not-so-decent cuddling and hugging, I guess such guys would engage in homosexual iintercourse if such huge amounts of money were involved.

i don't think they're fighting for a purse... they're fighting for a belt, the top of the hill, to be the champion. the money, the award? it's just consolation!

it's like this: if winning isn't everything then why do they keep score? they keep score to amplify the victory and the defeat. winning isn't everything because it is not on the fact you won, but how you won. it is not the fact you've lost but how you've lost.
