Sweet Potatoes (Whole with skins on)
Wash potato and pierce several times with a fork. Wrap individually in foil. Potatoes could be boiled in water for 10 minutes before wrapping to speed grilling process if desired. Cook for 40 to 45 minutes directly over medium heat. Turn potatoes a quarter turn about every 15 minutes. Cook until tender through to the middle when pierced with a fork.
Sweet Potatoes (Peeled slices) Peel potatoes and cut into 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick slices. Put in a saucepan and add with enough water to cover the potatoes. Bring to a boil and cook for 4 or 5 minutes. Drain, cool slightly, and coat both sides with melted butter. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes, turning once. Brush with melted butter throughout cooking time. Potatoes are done when nicely charred on both sides and tender when pierced.

Why do you say not to grill a yam or sweet potato? The key to success is indirect heat. I cut them into 3/8 inch slices, put them in a plastic bag, then drizzle them with canola oil or olive oil and season with "Grill Mates Sweet and Smoky Rub" or a mix of smoked paprika, dried crushed chili pepper, cinnamon, black pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. Everybody I have served them to loves them!!! I have to make sure to make a lot, because everybody goes for seconds! And NEVER add brown sugar and/or marshmallows to sweet potatoes or yams; they are naturally very sweet on their own. Don't ruin the health benefits and flavor!

Oh Ignore those who says you shouldn't grill. They dont know nothing. Just grill like any potatoes. I usually wrap them in foil to be on safe side then you can unwrap in last few min. Grilling is made for ANYTHING, you name it, it can be grilled!

I would put it on the grill for about an hour to an hour and a half over indirect heat, be sure to turn it. Also, I would wrap in foil for the first hour and the watch it closely for the last few minutes.

Here in Africa most people make a wood fire to cook their food.....we put the sweetpotatoe in the hot ashes of the fire and that takes about an hour........we have another storey to tell about yellow dry sweetpotatoes......we leave them in the oven on about 180 for about half an hour......we then hang a piece of string from the ceiling over the dining table with a piece of fat on it.....when we swallow the potatoe and almost choke on it then we swallow the piece of fat and so it goes around the table...same story....lol just a joke.......You grill it for about 20 minutes if it is a small sweetpotato.......

You have to bake it in a 400 degree oven for
30 minutes. When ready - add lots of Real Butter, Salt and Pepper.
Ignore those that say that it can be grilled -
it's a NO NO.
