Yes smelling things that aren't there can be a sign, but a very rare one. My husband was just diagnosed with a brain tumor and had surgery. The only sign he had was that his right side stopped working. No headaches or anything. You can go to hope.abta.org for more info.

yes with some brain tumors it impairs your smell..A brain tumor can obstruct the flow of cerebrosinal fluid (CSF), which results in the accumulation of CSF (hydrocephalus) and increased intracranial pressure (IICP). Nausea, vomiting, and headaches are common symptoms.

Brain tumors can damage vital neurological pathways and invade and compress brain tissue. Symptoms usually develop over time and their characteristics depend on the location and size of the tumor. A brain tumor in the frontal lobe may cause the following:

Behavioral and emotional changes
Impaired judgment
Impaired sense of smell
Memory loss
Paralysis on one side of the body (hemiplegia)
Reduced mental capacity (cognitive function)
Vision loss and inflammation of the optic nerve (papilledema)
A tumor located in both the right and left hemispheres of the frontal lobe often cause behavioral changes, cognitive changes, and a clumsy, uncoordinated gait.

A tumor in the parietal lobe may cause the following symptoms:

Impaired speech
Inability to write
Lack of recognition
Seizures
Spatial disorders
Vision loss in one or both eyes and seizures may result from a tumor located in the occipital lobe.

because all the smells intertwine when they cook and smell good. it's not hard to make food smell good. it's harder to make food taste good. my neighbors are full chinese i believe doubt they came from America but their house is a total pig sty. theirs crap they bring home from work all over their front yard and back yard and it's all broken things like tables, fridge, washing machines,etc.. but from time to time when they are cooking it smells really good. but i highly doubt it tastes that good. why? just walk infront of their door step and you will understand why theirs craps everywhere including dead plants/animals decaying like fish. Im sure they don't shop at a real grocery store either but the local china town and everyone in my state knows the china town isn;t very good for groceries as it's been known to carry rats and it isn't even that tasty. that being said don't let the smells fool you.
