I grew up in a traditional 9-months on, 3 months-off system, and I liked having a summer break. You can still be learning something during the summer months, and it gives you time to let go of past habits and get ready for a new year with a new set of people. In college I did attend during the summer and graduated in less than 3 year, but it may have been too quick to really absorb everything. I am leaning toward home-schooling as a future option, with shorter days and to keep learning during summer but with a bigger focus on outdoor activities, depending on where I end up living.

I think it should be an option. Kids used to have summers off so they could help harvest the crops on the family farm. That's really not an issue in most communities any more. If the kids don't have jobs lined up or great vacation plans more time in school would allow time to catch up, review or move ahead. Some kids would be able to graduate earlier or spend time preparing for exit exams and SATs
