Military service should never be compulsory. For the last 30 years or so, America has relied upon an all-volunteer force, one that has performed brilliantly when called upon. (The recent news about Haditha is by far the exception). It has been well documented around the world that countries that use predominantly volunteer forces will field a better military overall ( the only exception being Israel) Look at this way- who is going to be more enthusiastic about serving in the military- someone who wants to be there, or someone who was forced to?

I've answered this one before with an out-of-the-box response...

Not for the unemployed. Not to sound mean, but a large number of unemployeed people are not in the age range, not in healthy condition, &/or not to the psychological standards - did that all come out diplomatically?

I think it'd be a good thing to have universal compulsory service though. We do need an all volunteer standing Army, and I wouldn't change that. What I'd like to do is require people to do some public service: 2 years as a teacher, cop, firefighter, EMT, Peace Corps, OR a military option. That being basic & an orientation course, placed in the IRR (recallable in an emergency for up to 8 years). From the IRR you would be free to sign up for AIT in a specialty, do correspondence course work, or get scholarships to civilian tech schools. Offer some civilian options that can add point up for you faster (civil air patrol, coast guard aux, etc). All deferable till after college, just so you serve at some point. Again, the active military would still be all volunteer, as would reserve/guard.

I'd bet recruiting goals would be easy after that, since the first step is always the hardest I'm sure many would voluteer from compulsory to active duty while at training or after they get home. The military & those other professions deserve a population that respects what they do, and all citizens owe their country a debt for the freedoms they enjoy.

NO! To place people in the military just because they are "unemployed" would be very counter productive. The military needs people that are called to do the job they do. I agree that some of the unemployed could use a little discipline in their life, and that they should be required to perform some type of public service to receive unemployment compensation, but not in the military...

I did 6 years in the US Navy, was honorably discharged, worked for a company for 5 years, went back to school, worked at another company for 7 years, left that job for a position as a manager, and was laid off from there. So there are two problems:

1.) I already served and don't think I should be forced to serve again, and

2.) I was almost 40 when I was unemployed.

So, in a nutshell, my answer is no.

Every American at the age of 18 should at least do boot camp. College, work whatever after but it would be great to see some of these knucleheads get some Patriotism and respect for their country.

No way, I sure wouldn't have wanted to serve with unemployed folks who really didn't want to be there. Why don't you just call for the draft to be reinstated?!

No thanks. Give me volunteers any day of the week.
