i am a 20 year old female and i just decided to get into running. i just signed up for a 5k run - its in like 2 or 3 weeks. anyway, what is a good time to complete a 5k run in? i know im not going to do the greatest on my first race, but i just want to know what i am up against. thanks!

this is the perfect question for me. i run cross country and my races are 5k's. first it all depends on how long u have been training. it may not be too late to start if you havent already. and umm dont try to go for 47 minutes because i was in a race just recently and there was a walk option and my grandparents walked it. they got 36 minutes... so you should be able to get like 34 if you have been moderalty training. if you havent trained then a 36 min should be what you should try to get. my best time for a 5k is 22:46 but i have been training for a while so... remeber there are people who HAVE been training that run these races. when you start out DO NOT try to go as fast as them. you dont want to lose all of your energy early in the race. hey contact me if you have any questions my yahoo name is cheer_chick355. hope to here from you... oh by the way im not a nasty old man trying to hit on u i am a 15 year old girl . contact me if you have any questions.

World class times are 14 min for men, low 15s for women. At a typical local race, winning times are 15-18 for men, 17-20 for women, depending on the size of the race and local talent. The peak volume of "runners" will finish in the mid to high 20s, then trail off into the mid 30 minute range. You'll have walkers out there from 30 to 50 minutes.

Don't worry about competing in your first race. Go out there to have fun and see how it feels. Don't expect a lot with only a few weeks of running. Start out slower then you think. You can pick up the effort later, if you feel good. Remember that you're just starting out, while others have been doing this for years. I think that it's more important to feel good about the experience, than to worry about time or place. That way, you're more likely to stick with it.

For beginners, it's often helpful to find others to run with. Look for a local running club. Most running clubs are for recreational runners, and a great place for beginners to learn and meet others to run with. www.rrca.org

Also talk to people at local running stores, not general sporting goods stores. They should know about local running groups, routes, etc., and answer many of your questions.

I would say anything less than 50 minutes is good.
The last one I did my time was 47 minutes, but I was running with a friend who had a busted knee, and I didn't have proper running shoes.
They're a lot of fun though.

We'll Im going to be on cross-country this coming year, and we run 5K all the time. I was talking to my Track buddies(they're the one's who convinced me to do Cross-country) and they said anywhere from 25-30 minutes is good for females.

I'd say under 35 minutes is good. That would be 10 or 11 minutes per mile which is great for a beginner.

That's great!! I can't even get my *** on the treadmill and there's people out there like you who run for fun!! I'm just jealous.
