most states r different. here in nc, i had to have the following:
$17,500.00 in the bank for 6 months untouched!
a letter from another lic. contractor stating that u would be able to do such work.
bank statement signed from bank stating that u have keep $ 17,000.00 balance in their bank for the past 6 months
3 letters from people outside the trade about what type of person u r and that u would be a stable person and reliable.
last 2 yrs tax returns
then after all that they will allow u to go and take the test. mine was 4 hours of random questions and 4 hours of blueprint reading.

This varies from state to state. In NC you have to work two years for an employer in the field that you want to pursue. Then you have to contact your states license office to schedule a test. If you pass the required test they issue you your license. You will need to get a national code book because most of the test is based on it. They require you to have insurance and it is based on the type license you are going for. Limited, or Unlimited. If you look on-line under your states contractors license office they will explain to you all you need to know.

Usually your County Clerk can give you that infor or tell you the web site or Phone number in your State to find out. My state doesn't require contractors to have a license. Many states don't.
