Depending on what you are looking for, there are adoption or rescue agencies, often breed-specific, that will try to "match" you with a great dog. They will ask you all kinds of questions about what you are looking for, your lifestyle, your home, etc., then they will try to find a pet that matches. Then you get a chance to meet the dog, sometimes foster it for a little while to see if you really do hit it off together.
The best way is to do your homework - research and try to see what kind of dog best suits you, then try different dogs and see which ones you "click" with. Sometimes, if you just go see a dog without knowing much about it, its breed, history, etc., you can "love" a dog. But then when you actually have to live with him, you find there are things you can't live with. That is how a lot of dogs end up abandoned or in shelters. For example, shortly after the movie 101 Dalmations came out, Dalmations surged in popularity. There ended up being a lot of abandoned Dalmations because people saw them in the movie, thought they were cute and bought one, without realizing they can sometimes be difficult to train, and/or have behavioral issues.

Your best bet is decide what makes pratical since first.
like do want a inside dog?
If so short hair is nice not to get all over the house.
Do you have children?
You would not want a aggressive one if you do.
Do you want an active dog that needs a lot of exercise and have a yard to let him play and run?
Do you live in a apartment where he'd be left alone all day in a little room you will have to pick up poop?
You surely need to consider size of pet and size of room left in.
There's a lot of things to consider when "loving an pet"...
Try to write down what you want in your pet and the results of what happen if you "fall in love" with the wrong one.
Then go looking and avoid the ones you have narrowed out and only pay attention to the ones that make sense for your situation and you won't be able to not fall in love with him because basically he's/she's everything you want in a pet PLUS!

If getting the right companion is the question...the dog will let you know if it is interested in you first. As time goes by then you will grow to love the dog. No different than people. Good luck!!

When I met My dog she was two weeks old. My Friends dog had 13 pups and I went to see them. She was this little Runt. The other pups were crowding her out and she couldn't get any milk. When she was three weeks old, my Friend gave her to me. I bottle fed her (3 am feedings - auuggghhhh) and she slept with me every night. That was nine years ago and she is still my best friend and I love her almost as much as my kids.

you see it and yell, oh i love you! it also depends whether it likes you or not too. most of the ones that are really sweet and seem as if they'd make a good pet, are the ones that are truly man's best friend!
