Saffron. The flower that produces it grows from India to the eastern Mediterranean; it can't be commercially cultivated so it must be picked by hand; and it takes a lot of flowers to produce a pound of saffron, so yes, it's costly.

Buy in small quantities in an Indian import shop. Or type the word into your search engine to find sites where you can order it online. Keep tightly covered and use sparingly in Indian and other dishes for a wonderful aroma and flavor.

Truffles,Saffron,Caviar,a type of beef they have in Japan,the cow is fed a real special diet.Certain types of fish.The prices I am unaware of but you could probably go on the Internet and come up with something.Good luck on your quest.
