Well, in an automatic, just slow down real quick. If you drive a stick shift then downshift so that you slow down without your brake light going on...that really gets them!!!
ps. I HATE tailgaters. The only excuse is if you're driving too slow in the fast lane, in which case you should move over.

Depends on why they're tailgating you. If you're in the left lane of the interstate doing 5 under, move your *** over.

This recently happened to me on a dark two lane. The guy was so close I couldn't even see his headlights. He nudged me and I was very concerned for my daughter who was with me. I told her to get my cell phone and call 911.
The officer told me to slow down and get off to the side of the road and let the pick-up truck go past me. I was scared if I slowed down that he would do more than nudge me. I also knew that I couldn't hit the gravel going 55 or I would stand a chance of going out of control.
It was ugly. I slowed down slightly and found a non gravel clearing and got over to the side then used my brakes.
The officer said, "The best thing to do is get out of there way." I couldn't believe it! They did nothing.

I slow down to a ridiculous rate. My friend said this guy put high beams on his tail lights, so whenever someone tailgates, he flashes them.

Dont let them intimidate you to start speeding. I just ignore them. The worst thing you could do is slam on the brakes because then they could run into you and because you put the brakes on for no particular reason you get the bill for it.

It depends. If I'm in the fast lane and there's no one in front of me, I'm obviously slowing them down, so I speed up and/or get out of the way.
If I'm in some other lane, I normally slow down slightly to increase the distance between my car and the car in front of me.
If I'm driving on a local road, I slow down quite a lot.
Mostly, my goal is to avoid situations where I'm going to have to brake suddenly. Your car needs air around it. If you have less air behind you, you need more in front.

Get over. They've already shown their intentions and desire to get around you. Hitting the brakes is inviting trouble in one form or another. Just get out of their way and let them hurry up to the scene of their impending accident just ahead.

I tap my brakes but I don't slow down any. If I'm not blocked in by cars in other lanes, I will move to another lane.

Generally, I try and be polite and get out of his/her way. If someone is tailgaiting, then it probably means you are driving too slow to suit him/her. Be a good citizen and move over.

I usually have my seatbelt on, and then i STOMP on the brakes really fast. If they hit you, it's their fault, and you'll get a good amount of insurance money when they ram into the back of your car. it's worth the risk, trust me. If they don't hit you, they'll definitely back off. it scares the crap out of them. :o) have fun!
