I read your article and I don't agree with polygamy,
I believe it was once allowed by God
(the Christian God, the only God)
but only to populate the world, there ARE more women in the world then men, so everyone doesn't have a soul mate.., luckily many women are happy doing Gods work unhindered by the responsibility and duties of marriage.
Catholics were not the first Christians!
Catholicism is a idealistic religion, with so many lies installed by the rulers to keep people doing what they wanted.
so the thing about women not having souls, that was said by some catholic, not a true follower of Christ. much like how Islam was kept being forced on the people, punishible by death.
Eve was never blamed by anyone in the Bible.
Adam saw part of the creation Eve did not, she was mislead but Adam knew, and I'm not for blaming Adam or Eve...It was our human sin nature not any one person.

finer points in religion can never be understood or argued upon - why? Bcoz only wat to do that is to see if religion is true or false. As long as you view it as dogma - no answer. E.g. In them days men were the sole bread winners and can take women as possesions and man knows its his kids. So he likes to spend money on them. Maybe there was a surplus of women as men get killed in war, while work etc. etc. while ladies who are protected from them lived in numbers and so on.

If asked why it is not applicable now, the religious will say coz we have, in our sin, diverted society so far from God's plan and so instructions have become useless etc. the skeptic will say its coz religion is no good rubbish... so we go back to square one. Is religion true or false? Besides there is always the question if we interprete religion correctly as it was written so long ago. Want an example?
E.g. In buddhism, fifth precept is I shall not take alcohol which clouds mind and lead to evil. That is the literal translation. But for others, "there are so many many substances you could abuse yourself with the same effect and Buddha only wants to make a point that is understood by MOST people - Else he will have to list ALL substances which were not even discovered then and make alocations for those that have gone out of practice.....

Hope this clears your querry.

its important to realize that laws like that were written centuries ago, when having children was the only way to have retirement, so your children would take care of you. For the men it worked well to have many wives so that they could have a better chance of having many children, during that time the best women could hope for (its sad, i know) was to marry a rich man, and men who had a great amount of money were the only ones who could afford many wives.

Polygamy is not practiced in large part by muslims today.

In hindu literature, Draupadi had 5 husbands !!!

So, woman marrying 4 (or 5 times) is at least pausible in some religion, though practically, ancient Indian society did not allow polyandry.

Islam had a (supposedly) different reason of allowing 4 wives. Muslims were involved in all kinds of battles since their inception. Their society lacked able bodied men, in early times, who got killed in battles; and there were more of women than men (like our NY, USA). So, Muhammad and his followers allowed for 4 marriages.

Are U Nuts?

Women have brains, men have heads. Even after four marriages they cannot figure out what's missing.

Woman on the other hand has had enough with just one guy who if she was given a chance would well show even him how its done and get rid of him without a blink

very few muslim men marry four women... it was good at THE Prophet timewhen women needed to be protected from other tribes' men attacks... and men used to be killed at war. Islam prohibits sexual relationship without marriage.. so the only way to have a normal life for a woman back then was to be a 'dorra'
(a second or fourth wife). Also, in the Holy Coran it's written that 'if you want to be loyal.. you have to marry one woman'

it's a biological thing. in the old days when population was small it was known that men could father an unlimited number of children, but women could only bear a very limited number. so the strongest men took as many wives as they could protect. those days are pretty much over for now. it could happen again if something caused the population to drop drastically.

hey I DID read the ariticle. very informative. still dont agree with all that was written.for one thing, america has more boys born yearly then girls, but just a minor contradiction. Articles like this would help promote understanding among the different religions if only people would read them!!!!!

It takes one man to impregnate four women, but one woman can only be impregnated by one man at a time therefore if a woman had three husbands the breeding process would be MUCH slower than a man who had three wives.

Yes I buy the argument about perhaps many men died in wars and thus more women had to be protected, blah blah. Where is this explained in the quran so I can go check?

Shouldn't the inspired word of god transcend time?
