You may be boring him.Try to involve your son in the story. Ask him to point at certain pictures in the book, or ask him questions about it.
What types of books are you reading him? Always remember that you should read books to a child that are ABOVE his level. Books like Dr. Seuss are not good to read to children because they are made to be read BY children and not TO them. I hope that makes sense.
Since he is pretty young, try to make it as fun as possible. Use different voices, puppets, etc to make it exciting for him. If you can make him see that reading is fun at a young age, he will enjoy it forever.
Also, pick a time and environment that is relaxing. Before bedtime is a great choice.

Yes! This is a good sign. Keep reading to him. If he wants to turn the pages, get those block books and lift it up after you read the page and let him turn them. This is great that he will sit and look at the book like this, it only prepares him for when he can read. My daughter does the same as you describe and she is 15 months. This behavior usually means that you read a lot with or in front of your child, and he only mirroring what he sees. Keep up the good parenting.

You betchya. He's excited over the attention and one on one time he's getting with you. He thinks its a fun time!
A 17 month old doesnt have the mental attention span to sit through the reading of any book. Just try sitting with him and pointing and talking about the pictures, this is will encourage him to interact in a more enjoyable way. This is what he's doing when he sits quietly by himself, just thinking about the pictures.

He probably is not accustom to this whole reading thing give him a while because he is still growing
you may also want to consider tiring him out prior to sitting down and reading with him.
He also may think you are giving all of your attention to the book instead of him so make the act something that the both of you can enjoy

i think of he could be seen contained in the three's class, which preschool at this age relatively isn't needed. i'm basing this on the certainty that he would be 4 on November 2012, properly suited? if so, then he has ignored the 'cut back-off' dates for college. maximum childrens do earnings variety a factor-time area-day preK application while they're 4, the year formerly they commence public college. i think of the Kindergarten cut back-off is September thirtieth would desire to be 5. we've 2 in our living house with Oct/Nov b-days, and that they began college a lot later, 5 happening 6. touch your close by college district, they have an Early youth place of work that would enable you to extra. avert 'preschool classes' that run as an entire-time day care center. that isn't any longer what a three year previous needs, nor a preK4. maximum solid preschools are loose-status, and have been in employer for years.

Try giving him more control. Let him hold the book and instead of concentrating on the words that are written, talk to him about what you see on the pages. ex: Oh look at that red balloon. Look at that silly face the clown is making. Can you make a silly face?
Maybe if you start out that way it will grab his attention more and then as he gets older talk about the actual story.

At that age, almost anything is normal! He might just be the kind that needs quiet time. The hyperness and pointing though means he is paying attention and in a few months, he will want you to read it to him.

He might want to read it for himself, he's seen mom do it. When you're together he might just want to show you that he can be big and do things by himself. But when he's in his playpen he sees no hurry to show off, so he actually looks at the pictures.

he may b to young to hold his attention to a book right now. he may just want to explore right now. maybe u should not try to read the book, but try to look at pictures in the book and tell him the names of the things like animals, balls, etc. right now he probably just wants ot grab things and run for the hills, his attention span is not that great right now because he's still exploring his environment. wait a while and gradually it'll come.

Find a book on the different stages children go through. I think I read about that before. My granddaughter has gone through that stage. But there are all kinds of interesting books about raising children and there stages that will help you to understand what it is they are trying to tell you. God Bless.
