Yes, years ago. Hopefully the procedure has changed since then. There was a plastic tube from the bladder to the outside for the urine to pass and a button under the skin holding it in place. This had to be repaired a couple of times. The last incident was when the cat was playing with another cat and the whole assembly became dislodged and I had to have the cat put to sleep.

This was a special cat and got a couple extra years with him and he seemed very happy. However, knowing what I know now, would never do it again.

Good luck if you are considering this and pin the vet down for specific answers about complications, etc. As I said, hopefully there have been advancements in this field.

A pereneal urethrostomy (PU for short) is usually a last resort surgery if the cat has gotten a urinary blockage a number of times & traditional unblocking with a catheter is unsuccessfull. The male cat has become blocked & can't urinate & needs surgery to try to prevent this from happening again. In short, the male genitalia is removed (the very small part of the urethra & penis) and he is given a larger opening to urinate through like a female cat. One of my cats had the surgery 2 years ago. He's doing great on a prescription diet to control the crystal formation. The surgery to remove bladder stones is different & called a cystotomy.
