Congratulations! This is one of the best questions you have asked so far.
There is good news that the federal amendment did not pass. The bad news is that there are still plenty of states that already have passed amendments and laws banning gay marriage. Perhaps, with this being a states' issue, we will see another sad chapter (one that happened a little closer to home) repeat itself.
Unfortunately, you are getting some bad responses from people who don't see what you are seeing. Massive genocide, or even something not as extreme, doesn't happen overnight. We are seeing the beginings of the religious right's attempt to divide Americans. It won't stop here. If they had their ways, marriage wouldn't be the only right not allowed to gays. They would also not stop at gays.
What we are seeing isn't rasicm so people can easily look past it. They believe that people are gay by choice and that makes it easier for them to discriminate. They also believe that people are Muslim or Jewish or atheist by choice and they think that these people should change their ways.
The person who said history repeats itself is right. The more the religious right is allowed to control politics and our culture and divide Americans, the further away we will go towards allowing all people equal rights and equal freedoms.

The Nazi's did place homosexuals in camps along with the Jew's,gypsies, the disabled, and several other undesirables. They used a system to identify prisoners with symbols.Homosexuals wore a pink triangle.
But this won't happen here because there would be a massive fight against it.Even now there are many who see that amending the constitution to discriminate against a group of people is not going to pass. And even if it does there will be challenges aginst it that will eventually remove it.Bush is using this amendment as a tactic to gain support he has lost.Nothing more.People are realizing that the best way to not have a problem with gay marriage is to not marry a gay.But there is always going to be the ultra right wing religious extremists that want to turn the clock back and curtail every achievement that humanity has gained.
The world will go back to being flat.Witches will exist again.Slavery will be legal again.Women will be treated poorly again.Children will be put to work in factories again. And most of all, anything not endorsed by the church will be a sin and thus illegal and punishable by burning at the stake......Well, at least that is what they WOULD do if they COULD.....

We do not. We are not slaughtering you by the millions, gasing you in chambers, or sending you to concentration camps. Therefore we don't need to be able to identify you as you walk down the street. We're not illegalizing what you do, we're illegalizing your marrying.
If we don't stop it here, eventually it will become legal to marry a monkey.
I may admit that there is an occasional radical. That is the same for Christians as anyone else. Just because there's one bad apple, don't think they're all bad.
Consider this, Gays and Lesbians are at the moment able to do put porn in their windows but Christians aren't allowed to say "Merry Christmas". Just in case you were starting to think we were this big strong radical faction that's controlling the U.S. If you want to get married, move to Canada.
As long as people like me have a say, America will still have at least a bit of morality left, and while she does she will survive.
We are a nation under God, and it's our values that have made us succeed. Were it not for this foundation we would already be gone under. If we change it now, it'll be the end of us. If we stick to what we were founded upon, we can survive though the world around us fall, we still shall stand.
Americas people were given the right to pursue happiness, and live. They were not given the right to force them upon others. If the national majority says no, then no.
If you feel persecuted, try being a Chinese Christian for a day. Actually, you'd probably have more like three miserable hours.

They wouldn't wear the Gold Star, that was for Jews during the Holocaust. The homosexuals were given Pink Triangles to wear (I know, it sounds silly, but that's what they had).
What I see happening with this is people attempting to use their religion to make laws in our country, which is unconstitutional. The Christian religion calls Homosexuality an abomination (the Bible... their god... expresses this much) and so they think the Constitution should reflect this. I disagree. I refuse to live in a theocracy and will vote against any such thing made law based on anyone's religion...
The way I see it... If you don't like Homosexuality... then don't become a Homosexual. How tough is that?

Well, it does start with a gradual erosion of rights.
I don't think the conservative politicians are thinking this. The extremist nutcases, who knows. I think the politicians are thinking more about getting votes come November, and thus throwing out an emotional issues that will charge up their base and divide the country.
It didn't pass, thankfully (although, here in PA we just passed a state Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage - morons), and I don't believe it is likely to pass, given the growing acceptance of homosexual individuals in this country.
That, and they don't have a Constitutional leg to stand on.

The religious right, for the most part, believe that being gay or lesbian is voluntary, and that people choose to do it, and it's wrong. So, no, they don't want them to wear a yellow star, they want them to stop being gay.
Which I think is weird, because I don' t think I could be voluntarily gay. I wouldn't have thought that was possible for anyone. It makes me think alot of those people on the religious right have gay impulses. Otherwise, why would they be so mad that some people are following them.

Wait a second -- you're equating support for the Defense of Marriage Amendment with treating gays like the Nazis treating the Jews?
Sorry, but such overemotional rhetoric has absolutely no place within a logical, reasoned debate.
I am tired of people demonizing other people with such outrageous labels, simply because they disagree with them.
Nobody's tarring anybody with yellow stars here. The only person doing the tarring here is you -- you are the one trying to hang the labels on people here.

The Christian Church has a long and well known history of slaughtering non-believers, racial minorities, gays, and other "unnaturals" in the name of their God. It was until the development of Democracy that rational people were able to speak out against the inherent evil of the Church. If the Christian Church has its way, they would still be burning people at the stake. Christianity is the greatest threat to humanity of all time.

He is trying to make people think. There is division going on in America and around the world. As long as people are categorized they can be viewed as less then human. That is why the holocaust was able to happen and why most of the world did not care.

Not that I know of. In Nazi Europe, gay men were made to wear pink triangles, women wore black triangles - for the same reasons that Jews were forced to wear the Star of David. That's where those symbols come from.
