ONLY Jews, Christian and Moslems answer
When Jesus said this, he was referring to the religionist and hypocrites of his day.
But what does that say about:
the burning of Joan of Ark;
or ttat the main Judi-Christian country, the US have the highest percentage of prisoners, four times higher than even communist China;
or about the blood bath of the crusaders;
or about witch burning because the preachers were so ignorant;
or about lies from clergy and priest including intentional mistranslation of certain scriptures;
or about the focus on MONEY, the Jesus said to preach FREELY without taking money;
or about bombing innocent women and children in Iraq and elsewhere;
or about the world trade center allowed by Bush administration for political gain;
or about crazy suicide bombers with no regard for the innocent;
Sadly, the list goes on and on for all Jewish, Christian and Moslem sects …
Were they created in GOD'S image … or did they create a god in their image?

Don_S, gummibears06, laflaka474, ambassador, John_M: are typical shallow religionists answers that just like to hear themselves talk. They evade answering the real question from the heart.
dcfingringhoe@btinternet.com; good answer except the last part….you cannot make a pear tree bear apples. Jesus went on the say that the bad trees will be uprooted and destroyed.
Bepell and AlwaysLaughing had pretty good answers except, you cannot OVERLOOK bad fruit. Jesus was diligent in condemning the false religionists of his day. We must also if we follow his example.

the best way to justify cruelty performed is to blame it on satan and it relieves them of personal responsiblity for what happens i think the reason they disclaim it is because of how negative they are as a people. the most negative people in this world in general are the ones that espouse religion. but whoever said you know a person by his fruit is wise and correct whether it was jesus or hitler that said it doesnt matter one whit. its a good way of understanding that it doesnt matter who you are or what you believe if your a negative person you will do negative things and that those negative things will be the example you show to others and they will know you for a negative person.

When Jesus said this, he was referring to how a persons works would be. Humans are the tree, the fruit is the spiritual works that show. Since "faith without works is dead", he is referring to this type of works, or fruit. Remember, God in his due time, will set matters straight. You and I shouldn't worry about others and their wrong doing, but make sure that we survive Gods great day "Armageddon."

We all are created in God's image and we can discern who we agree with, hangout with, and be friends with. I mean a majority of people (hopefully) have common sense to figure out that, that is not love. If love was our governer like God wants us to live by, than those things would happen. But only a few of us get it, love does not hurt others around you. Love overlooks those "bad fruits" and move on.

Yes, but Jesus is talking in parables. He means that you can tell a persons character by how they behave - a tree bearing bad fruit is probably bad at its roots too - a person who is bad all the time is probably bad from their roots also. Of course though, a person who has always had seeds of bad shown them will grow like their planter. Sow good seed and good fruit will grow. With care a bad tree can be made to bear good fruit.
God did make man in his image but he also gave us free-will. It is that abuse of free will that gets us into trouble.

It is referring to someone's actions, word and deeds. All of those examples that you cited show those people for what they really are by how they did things. Everyone is created in God's image but these people have created God in their image and twisted His divine truth around to justify their own selfish and evil deeds

You must not read the Bible; we will ALL be judged one day. Everyone can pass their judgements on anyone, but like I just said, we will ALL be EQUALLY judged when that time comes.
Actually, a tree can bear another's fruit, it's called grafting, look it up. My grandfather did this for his grandkids.
To the questioner, you must have no faith at all for asking these questions. A pity for you

The best way for satan and his minions to condemn Christianity is to use the transgressions of people and religions that blame Christianity.
Fundamental to satan is lying, and insisting that all one needs to be Christian is to claim the title is a lie.
A Christian walks a spiritual path of love and truth, and the fruits of that walk are peace and contentment.
The fruits of liars are hate, chaos, confusion, pain, and suffering.
This I believe;
