Wouldn't I have better movement, and more speed if they didn't force us to wear the karate outfit. I would prefer to train in a pair of short and sleeveless shirt.

10 (oops, 11) reasons you wear a (fake) kimono:

1. That way, people can't push you around or see your body.
2. Just because your trainer has a kimono fetish.
3. Your trainer is torturing you in particular with a kimono.
4. Kimonos are cheaper than the real stuff. Hail Wal-mart.
5. Hey its Japanese right? First they took over the auto industry, next the kimono, then the world.
6. Maybe kimonos don't burn easy...its to fire-proof you.
7. To hide bad body odor...all students MUST wear kimonos.
8.. Oh wait, your suit just looks LIKE a kimino. I thought it WAS a kimono until now.
9. It's to get you ready for the real kimino when you advance to that level...the black belt kimono level...
10. Aren't all karate suits now are factory made replicas?
11. Doesn't Jackie Chan wear a kimono? Oh, sorry.

The purpose for the uniform is to keep all the students looking the same and consistent not to stand out above the rest. When most people come to a Martial Art school they are their for a reason either to get into shape or build their self confidence or are just curious and have no idea what to expect ,so if you have a hot dog that's wearing a workout uniform thats in shape and showing off, it will deter them from wanting to join.

There are some grappling techniques in karate. Those suits don't get ripped apart too easily.
Besides, if you're used to heavy clothing, then you will be slightly faster when wearing light clothing than training with light clothes.

the heavier the clothing you train in the better you get at the art because if you wear a lighter outfit youre automatically faster and they dont tear but the canvas ones require gaffa tape for when you do sit ups
