It is probably because the natural aspirations of particularly Western Culture is always to reach for something better. The whole basis of a Market Economy is to sell and to buy. Thus there is always a better washing machine, car, TV, Video, mobile phone etc.And the advertisers do their best to make you want these items. They also see others better off than themselves and jealousy and envy do the rest. Some people DO care about others but these are in the minority.

Because so many parents just give and give and give to kids who don't appreciate anything. They think the world owes them something. Then the kids in America that are poor get laughed at or put down because their parents are unable to give them these things are made fun of. So many are struggling just to put a roof over their heads and food in their bellys. It's nice to be able to give your kids things but I also think they should have to see how the other part of the real world lives and do charity work or something to appreciate what they have. Because so many don't. They just want more.

Blame Western Governments for that one.

There was recently a Make Poverty History campaign highlighted by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, we also has Live Aid as far back as the 1980s.

The Governments sat on their a**es as per usual.

I think the reason for us westerners (especially Americans/Canadians) not appreciating what we have is this: We are spoiled and don't care for others, like we should. All we do is "want want want" when there are people in third world countries who are really in desperate need for everyday things, like food, water, shelter, and clothing, that we take for granted.

Most people don't think about it.

Your own problems always seem more important than everybody else, then the problems of family and friends, and then the people that you know, then perfect strangers.

It is, I think, a question of immediate impact. What is going to effect me the soonest.

And all of those people living in poverty...well, it's just that "all of those people" they don't have names or faces or stories so that we feel like we know them.

We invest more of ourselves, emotionally, in those people we know or think we know.

It's because we in America live around technology and stuff like that. We get used to it and start taking it for granted.
