I have dental implants and I am totally thrilled with them. My smile is amazing and to see me smile you would never know I wasn't born with these teeth. They are secure and lovely.

Check out this website's before and after's of my Doctor's. They are pioneers in this field in and originated the "teeth in a day" and "teeth in an hour" dental implant program.

Dental implants are one of the best ways for dental prosthodontics, but you have to make sure you are a candidate for the procedure. The dentist needs to make sure there is enough bone support and that it doesn't impinge on any major nerves. The aesthetics will vary depending on the amount of bone and the soft tissue covering it. Sometimes it will also require a visit to the periodontist for gum surgery to make the implant emerge from the gums nicely and look more like a real tooth. Although implants seem expensive, they cost about the same as a 3 unit bridge and don't require cutting down the adjacent teeth. Depending on where the implant is placed, it will take somewhere from 4-9 months to heal and integrate into the bone. It used to be that the implant would be placed and the crown wouldn't be delivered until healing was finished, but nowadays, more and more dentists are placing the restoration at the same time. Shop around and see which oral surgeon/periodontist/prosthodontist/general dentist has what you're looking for. If I were to get an implant, especially on the lower jaw, I would want somebody who has the ability to take a CT scan for more accuracy in placement.

Dental implants are often the best treatment for missing teeth. When a damaged or decayed tooth is removed, both the visible part of the tooth, called the crown, and the root are lost. A dental implant is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth or for an implant supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth. Dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth. They will allow you to confidently eat, smile, laugh, talk, play and enjoy all of your regular activities of everyday life without thinking about your teeth.

Crazy_Sherm hit it right on the nail. To reiterate, make sure you're dealing with a doctor who has many years of experience with implants. Not all doctors are familiar with implant technology. Stay far away from cheap doctors. It is a sure sign of inexperience and he probably uses a cheap dental laboratory to cut costs. Just remember, "you get what you pay for"
Cheap doctor + Cheap laboratory = Wasted money and or pain and suffering. In the Dental world, implants are the most dangerous procedures to perform because they will be drilling into you bone pretty darn close to your nerves.

I was supposed to get one b/c I INSISTED that they pull a bad tooth instead of crowning it. However, this is my last (very back) tooth and I am not about to spend that money. You have to REALLY watch those people. We definitely need to maintain our teeth, but they like to fatten their wallets by convincing everyone that we must all have a perfectly straight, perfectly white set of 32. When I nix'd the crown, they thought they could get me on an implant, but I'm fine without. They say opposite teeth will start to move, but it could take decades and I figure I'll deal with that when it comes.
If you really need one, say where it's visible, I understand that they are really reliable and feel real and everything. Make sure you go to someone highly qualified who has done many of them!
