Running provides numerous benefits. It increases your energy level, keeps your cardiovascular system in peak condition, encourages you to be healthy in other areas of your life, promotes social activity with other runners who are frankly among the best looking people out there, makes you more mentally engaged with the world around you, provides lots of volunteer opportunities, etc etc etc.
The one real drawback to running is the wear and tear possibilities on your knees. But those are avoidable as long as you build up to long distances instead of try to attack them from day one. Running is an awesome activity and lots more people should discover it!

Running is a cardiovascular activity. The benefits of running and any other cardio activity is that you build endurance, strength, increase metabolism, increase bone density, decrease resting heart rate, and much much more
I am a certified personal trainer and I can help you plan a regiment for you.
If not I hope this helps.

It burns a ton of calories (I am a 120 lb female and I burn about 100 calories a mile--more calories are burned if you weigh more), doesn't require any fancy equipment (all you need are a pair of decent running shoes [not just any old sneakers!] and a sports bra if you are a female), can be done almost anywhere, builds your cardiovascular endurance, and is a great way to meet people. I have run two marathons and in training for them have made a bunch of friends. You definitely bond with people when you are sweating through those miles! Plus, you feel great about yourself and your accomplishments.

Helps build up your muscles. Your heart is also considered a muscle and it helps fight against heart disease. Not only that but it is healthy for your bones. Without exercise your skeletal system would deteriorate.
Running or shall I say light running is good for you. Walking helps you lose weight but running gets your muscles pumping and your heart really going, and your heart needs this in order to stay healthy. Wear comfortable shoes with lots of padding so you don't put to much strain on your joints.

Actually walking is better for you than running is.
Running is the same as walking except you are putting more strain on your legs and body. The best way to exercise is to walk. And actually, I walk to stay in shape and I use little tricks to keep it up. . .I walk normally everyday as a routine, but also, if I go places I don't look for parking spots close to the door, so that way I can walk a little further just doing everyday things.

I'm not sure if it's true, but I hear it's bad for your knees. Bicycle instead. I prefer biking anyway.
