ASL is a great language, but it is not universal. I tried to learn French and Spanish, but just could not pick it up. I had so much more luck with ASL. I think it all depends on your learning style.

Spanish is one of the easiest languages for English-speakers to learn. It doesn't have many sounds (like the French and Portuguese nasal vowels) that are hard to pronounce, and words are pronounced the way they're spelled.

American Sign Language is not all that easy. Learning non-verbal communication is *very* different from *speaking* a new language. It is a lot of fun to learn, though. And, no, you *cannot* use it "around the world". In fact, British Sign Language is very different from ASL (which is based on the *French* Sign Language).

personally, I think sign language is best and easiest (no conjugating verbs for one thing!) also it is recognized worldwide with some cultural differences - but a most useful tool.
