Solomon asked God for wisdom to Reign over the people righteously. He cared about being the best King for the people. He didn't ask for riches..... This pleased God. It is a promise to anyone who asks, God gives liberally. James 1:5,6.... Jesus is wiser than Solomon.

When Solomon was a boy, God decided he liked to fellow (being his best king's son and all) and came to him. He asked Solomon if he wanted anything in the whole world, what would it be.
Solomon thought ahead at what each gift might bring, but he thought wisdom would best suit a ruler to be, and he asked for it. Then god gave it to him along with riches because he was so happy with him.
I forgot the location of the verses. I'm sorry. but I know the story by heart. that is why God blessed Solomon with wisdom.

Solomon was blessed with so much wisdom because wisdom was needed in order to be the wise King of Israel & to do God's will.
In 1 Kings 3:7, Solomon acknowledges that he is "but a little boy. I do not know how to go out and how to come in."
In verses 8: Solomon continues to ask God for wisdom "to judge your people, to discern between good and bad; for who is able to judge this difficult people of yours?"

Solomon prayed for the wisdom to rule over his kingdom in the way that God wanted. God saw that his heart was in the right place, so he answered Solomon's prayer by generously giving him the wisdom, PLUS wealth and power.

God granted him 1 wish (anything he wanted) and Solomon asked for wisdom. Being the answer that God wanted to hear, God granted him the wisdom he desired.

It was Gods will to have the "seed" as mentioned in Genesis to come from this Davidic line. Solomon wanted to rule his subjects similar to how God ruled humans-in a just way. So he wanted to have wisdom to handle such a task. Solomon could have asked for more money, but he asked for something far more valuable.
Good lesson for us today.

because when God asked Solomon what he wanted most Solomon said he wanted wisdom. And Solomon not only gained wisdom he gained riches and fame too.

read more before that passage. basically God told Solomon that he would give him 1 desire-- kinda like granting him 1 wish. when Solomon could have asked for riches, wives, anything in the world he asked for wisdom- so God gave him wisdom and because of his choice God also gave him riches and wives and cattle and just blessed him abundantly.

Solomon asked for it. Since he did not ask for "material" things but wisdom to rule the kingdom God blessed him with that and wealth.

1 Kings 3:7 has Solomon admitting he was young and inexperienced especially to be king.
1 Kings 3:9 has Solomon requesting God grant him wisdom.
God apparently O.K'd the request.
