Ask local vets and dog training schools for recommendations. You should be able to find their numbers in a phone book.

You could also approach people you see walking that breed of dog.

I agree with the answerer above who said about trying to adopt from rescue centres. When I was growing up we rescued quite a few older German Sheppards and they were so loyal in return. You may be lucky and be able to get a puppy through this method if the original owner gave them up because they couldn't cope with how much hard work having a puppy can be.

Our dogs lived until about 14-17, although some times rescue centres don't know how old the dogs are and have to make an educated guess. German Sheppards make lovely pets, the saddest thing though is when their back legs go, which happens a lot to this breed of dog when they get older.

Congratulations on the decision to get a new family member!

Always check out www.petfinder.org for pets in shelters near your area. If you cannot find a pet through a local shelter then your next step is finding a responsible and ethical breeder. This is much harder than it sounds. The breeder should be most important thing to consider before buying a dog. Finding a good breeder will save you money and heartache.

Also visit the American Kennel Club website for a good list of breeders: www.akc.org

These are two REALLY GOOD links with tips on finding someone who has the welfare of the dogs in mind and are not out only to get your money.
