The most common cause is alcohol, however medications such as birth control pills can too. Infections, tumors and the ever elusive "idiopathic" meaning heck if I know.

Primarily, it's caused by overconsumption of alcohol over a long period (alcohol abuse/alcoholism). Too much ethanol in your system causes several problems in the pancreas, and each builds on the other until you have a serious problem. Over time, ethanol changes the chemical composition of pancreatic fluids, causing "plugs" of protein that obstruct the flow of enzymes out of the gland. This leads pancreatic (digestive) enzymes to build up in the pancreas *and* to activate prematurely (i.e. before they leave the pancreas and enter the stomach). They then start...well...digesting your pancreas.
Other things can cause the disease by creating obstructions in the pancreas/pancreatic duct (causing build-ups of the enzymes, &c). These include biliary stones, blunt force injury, high cholesterol, and hyperparathyroidism.
The eMedicine link has a list of "minor" causes of the disease (but they're much rarer).
The Y! directory actually has decent info on the disease if you want more.

Stress caused by a nagging wife. My brother -in-law had it because of his nagging wife. Poor chap does not drink alcohol, does not eat greasy food either. Most displined character on all fronts. Sure his wife is responsible for his pancreaitis.
