I have a Sony Mavica and an HP Photosmart 735. I'd highly recommend either of these brands. The HP cameras are easy to work with and you can get good quality in any price range.
Try shopping for them at Staples, Office Depot or Best Buy as well as checking out the HP link below.

Brand: Sony Model: Cybershot You get what you pay for and with Sony you always get quality equipment and quality after sales service. about 4 or 5 years ago my wife bought me a 7.2 Megapixel Sony Cybershot digital camera. Top of the range when you bought it for £320. I took some photo's with it the other day for a work related issue, i sent the photo's to a wide selection of work colleagues as was required and got a huge bunch of reply's complimenting me on the photo's and asking what digital camera i was using. Many were flabbergasted when they found out how long i have had the camera. The camera fits in your palm and if you buy a larger memory card off ebay it also shoots like a camcorder. Now you will be able to pick up a 12 to 15 megapixel cybershot for less that what she paid easily. Let me sum up your decision in one word SONY Hope this helps.

I have and would recamend the Sony DSC W-100. It has 8.1 megapixel, and a 3x optical zoom and 2 time digital zoom. It has the highest ISO (1250) without going to an SLR. Its also very small. It takes awsome pictures, has a super bright flash. This is my 3rd sony and i have never had any problem with any of them. Its only $349.99, and its on sale right now at circuitcity.com (the store will match their websites price) If you do get this one, get a 1 gig memory card from costco, its only $39.00!

I love my small Sony Cyber-shot with 7.2 mega pixels. Takes great pictures quickly and is small enough for me to carry in my pocket if need be. I photograph everything and would be lost without this camera. You can even add onto your camera when your budget allows. For instance - picking up a wide lense as an attachment to my Cybershot! Got mine at Best Buy (bestbuy.com) for about $500 over a year ago - sure prices have gone down by then. Good luck and remember, it is not the camera's fault, it's the one taking the pictures :)

Hey! I have a sony cybershot.. with 4.1 megapixels its a couple years old and def not the best you could get i think it was like $200 so youd be able to get a much better version with $400.. But it works very nicely! has a bunch of different flash modes, certain ones for people, or for skylines, for day for night, etc. I really like them because you do see a great difference in the pictures when you use diff flashes. It can also take video clips. You have to buy a separate memory card mine was about 60ish? I wanna say i dont remember, but it holds about 150 pictures AND ive been a drunk fool a couple times and dropped it on rock hard pavement more than once and it still works like new! haha.......
yeah mines def old not seein it on a website.. but check the new ones

ok, for the 400$ range, canon is the best. if you go for SLRs, u will have to look for nikon cameras.
if you want to a snap and shot, cool-looking camera, i recommend a canon powershot sd630. i have had one canon sd for 3 years now, it never failed and it takes great pictures. the value is great for the price. it also has this "cool" factor that will make you the star in a party :-)
if your priority is photography though, i recommend a canon powershot a700. the lens is better, and the pictures are excellent. there are also more options. but it is definetely less sleek. also the former camera can just be put in your pocket or anywhere u can think of.
cheers

I have a Sony and love it, check out consumer reports and do some online research to make sure you get the features you want. With $400, you can get a pretty good camera! Good luck!

I must assume you did your homework and know what features are important to you.( resolution, zoom, speed, etc.)
I suggest you pretty much ignore high numbers when it comes to digital zoom, and focus on optical zoom if high magnification is important.
Stick with the name brands, (the Cannon Power Shot is a good suggestion) Narrow down to the Fuji's, HP and the like.
