The City said we must have a 2 car garage & if we don't undo what was done, the City will do it & it will cost us much, much more. Is this possible after all these years? Who do I contact for this?

I want to thank you all very much for your answers. Does any one know what exactly I need to prove this to the City? I have many pictures of my children as baby's & toddler's in them, they were born here in 1976 & 1978. Would pictures of my husband in his office before his heart surgery & after be enough evidence to prove that this remodel was done 28 yrs ago? I do have medical records of his 1st quadrupel surgery when he was 29 yrs old. My husband is his father's Assodiate in their corporation, Calif.Licensed State Architect & his father hired the engineer's, electrition & contractor's who did the actual work. His father is still an active Architect who has just finished Nancy Reagan's project, of duplicating their Santa Barbra ranch in Simi Valley near the Reagan library. I feel we are being singeled out unnecessarily, when there are so many other obvious violations & unpermitted residential fire & safty hazards, remodels & addition's on our street.

Your state legislator. There should be grandfather provisions for the remodel. Also, the building codes and standards have been in constant state of change for the past 30 years. Contact your state representative. That is HIS or HER job.

A lot of times state legislators are lawyers, so you can be talking to a legislator who can change the law or get you grandfather rights. Also, legislators are really excited to have constitutents call them because they generally want to impress the whole neighborhood that they can handle it. They also hope you remember their names at election time.

Contact a lawyer. You should be grandfathered in as long as you can prove this change was done 28 years ago. If that doesn't work, call someone like Sean Hannity, he loves it when municipalities pull stupid crap on homeowners.

They're basically trying to extort you out of the taxes they missed out on. All comes down to the $$$$ needed to feed the gov't machine.

If you have the original permits pulled to renovate, you have Grandfathered your renovations and they really can't make you undo it!

Been through it.... Don't be bullied!

If you have done it in "78" you are under the grandfather act. you can fight it in your city council. don't let the city run you over.

You may just need to appeal the decision and point that out.
