To build respect in any relationship, you have to respect yourself first. Nobody will respect you if you don't. Treat the person the way you would want to be treated.

To build "respect" in a romantic relationship, you have to demonstate some independence without being mean at all.
So you don't yell. You do balance the yes's with the no's.
You don't always give in to their wants -- learn and require equal sharing.
Don't make your mate your "whole" world...show you have other friends and other interests, but keeping your mate first most of the time.
Don't drink to excess. Don't "fault-find"; and keep any verbalizations of problems on the funny, or as a cute tease.
Accept your mate's shortcomings, and EXPECT them to accept yours as well. Don't be naieve or inferior.
And without being inferior, be humble and loving.
When an argument looms, walk away, and don't come back until you've figured out a way to make things lighter.
Don't be afraid to say "Let's make up".
Don't be afraid to 'agree to disagree' especially on politics and religion.
Use common sense. And be loving and helpful, but don't let anyone get you into a positon of doing all the giving. Nor should you do all the taking. Even if your mate is a person called a "giver", make sure you find out what they like, and give it to them, even if they aren't demanding. Ask questions.
If your mate is what they call a "taker", make sure you don't let them do that all the time...make sure you do things YOU like too.
If you are unsure if you are pleasing your mate, the easiest way to find out exactly what they want is ASK.
I wish you love

The same way you build respect in any type of relationship. A person is still a person regardless of the situation.

Dont give it up in the first five minutes to begin with, make him love you and respect you b4 you give in. Respect should be a given in any relationship, however todays society doesnt really make that happen. Make it known in the beginning that this is what you deserve and expect, if he doesnt follow, kick him to the curb.
