It is breaking an image up into pixels, just like a computer screen. Like a computer screen, CRT (cathode ray tube) or LCD (liquid crystal display) can be used, along with Texas Instruments DLP
which uses color wheels and many tiny movable mirrors to produce the image. The image is projected on a screen. Some movie theaters use digital projection, as the images are sharper. Some movies are totally digital: shooting, editing and projecting.
An important factor in a purchase is how many lumens you need (a unit of brightness), which depends upon distance of projection and the amount of ambient light.
