Don't be an idiot. Dogs in back of trucks is a cowboy tradition. It's the idiot rednecks who don't take the time to train their dogs that you need to direct this towards. Don't complain about something that you know absolutely nothing about.

This is a sad but true statement. While working at a SPCA animal control officers brought 2 dogs into the shelter that had to be euthanized. I read the animal controls report and it stated that a yound man was driving his pick up truck down a local highway with his two beautiful labs in the back of his pick up truck. The pick up truck did not have a dog box so the dogs were not secure. The truck was involved in a car accident and both dogs were thrown out of the truck. The car directly behind the pick up truck ran over both dogs. Both dogs had several broken bones and internal injuries. By the time they reached the local shelter because it was a weekend no vets were opened, both dogs suffered so much that they went into shock and began convulsing. Up until this point I really questioned the whole Euthanizing thing. I saw euthanizing these two dogs as an act of mercy. I do feel that traveling with a dog like this is an act of cruelty. It is not the dogs fault that they have an idiot for an owner. More people need to complain to the authorities so legislation can be passed to protect things like this from happening. By the way; the guy driving the truck in the true story I just told you about was never fined and even came into the shelter a few days later looking to replace the two that were lost. I asked him if the dog would be traveling in the back of his truck. He replied yes and guess what? I denied his adoption application. He will never get another dog through the SPCA!

Start a petition. Contact your local lawmakers. Ask your local humane societies if they have any horrible photos of dogs who died that way. Put up warning signs at your local feed stores, pet shops and vets. Make a safety video with cowboys and truckers in it, advising others of how dangerous this is. Get it aired on your local Cable access channel or send it to the ABC News "7 on your Side" show. Remember, people used to hold their infants on their laps in vehicles not too long ago - now they have to be in car seats.
A dog loose in the back of a truck can easily be thrown out and killed in an accident or if the driver has to swerve. If they don't want to get a cap for the truck, they can strap a plastic airline-safe crate (like a Vari Kennel) into the bed. There are companies that make harness systems to protect the dogs, but in an accident the dog is still likely to be killed.
The "Watsons Canine Safety Harness", the "Canine Friendly Vet Harness" and the "Be-Bop Secure Fit Dog Harness" are available at www.dog.com - this is designed to attach to the seatbelt inside the car, but could be rigged to a cable in the bed of the truck. The cable has to be short enough that the dog cannot be thrown from the truck and dragged - or crushed if the truck flips over.

Unless you are putting a seat belt on your dog when it rides in the front, I'm not sure what the difference is. Your dog is still going to get hurt if something happens. And most dogs in the back of the trucks are trained to ride back there. If you are going to go that far what about people who leave their dogs in the house alone while they are at work. Should they be fined if there is a fire and the dog gets hurt? I think you need more to do with your time.

I agree that people who let their dogs ride in the back of the truck should be fined. Either let the dog up front with you or leave it at home. I have seen dogs jump out of trucks and have seen some killed this way. It used to be quite a common sight to see kids riding in the back of a truck also, and still see that happen some here in the south. I wholeheartedly disagree with that. They make you wear seatbelts but allow kids to ride in the back of a truck! Bad.

In Texas there has recently been a law put into place that requires any load in a truck bed to be properly secured and covered. I think that any dog owner that has dogs in the bed of a truck should be stopped by police and ticketed for "improperly secured load." If enough tickets are given out then maybe people will get the idea that there animal is worth the trouble of securing. This law was put into effect to prevent trash from being blown about on our highways and motorists being hurt by debris flying out of trucks. However, it can be applied to dogs.
For the record: I proudly call myself a redneck and I take my 3 dogs with me often, but only in the cab of my truck.

Well... alot of people won't agree with you when you say that they should have their dog in a crate. If people are going to have their dogs n the back, the least they can do is make sure the dog is tied to something-even then I don't feel like they are protected enough. People need to think about their dogs safety. If you had to slam on your brakes really fast, your dog-whether in the back of the truck or in your car with you-would be catapulted out of the car or towards the front. Have you ever seen pictures of accidents that showed the family dogs just in a bloody mess? It's sad.

I would like to know if you have statistics on how many dogs get killed riding in the back of trucks.
Dogs are not stupid. I've never seen a dog jump out of a moving truck.
Most dogs LOVE to ride in the back of a truck, and they would hate to be put in a cage.
You ought to get a fine for being stupid.

Dogs in trucks is extremely dangerous if they are loose. No matter how well trained, they could still slip. They make a specific leash that fits to a bolt in the middle of the truck bed. Totally safe, they cannot jump out, fall out, or get hanged. Any other way is dangerous. I hate to see a dog loose in a truck bed, no matter how happy t he dog acts, he doesnt know what's best. If we could just let more people know about these safety products, it would help.

Don't be ridiculous! Dogs love the wind in their fur. Okay, so dogs in the back of trucks is bad but people can cart around 15 illegals in the back of a pickup and that's okay? Someone should lock you up in a cage. Get a life!

In California there is a law that your dog has to be restrained (best word I could think of) right in the middle of the truck and close to the cab. Still I see crazy idiots driving with there dog loose. I think the only thing we could hope for is enforcement. Not only could the dogs get killed, but people as well. Think of the accidents that could be caused. If you take your dog in your truck, please let them drive in the cab!!!
