My friend and her husband just bought a car off of ebay, a fixer-upper and they haven't mentioned any problems. They had to drive to New York to get it. I think ebay would only help with issues such as paying for the car and not getting it or not getting what was advertised on ebay. It sounds kind of risky though, I don't know, especially if you don't know a lot about cars.

I don't want to discourage you, man- but it's very risky IMO. I haven't bought a car from Ebay, but I have bought a lot of cars before. 37% of all cars sold by private parties are sold because they have major problems of some sort.
But basically, whenever you buy a used (or even a new car), you have some risks involved.
You can buy a car from Ebay, but if you do, have money set aside to do repairs, in case you need to. The more money you have set aside, the better. It's hard to say an amount. You may have to replace the engine or the transmission- so if you have the luxury of cash, I would set aside 5,000 dollars.
Sorry to be so pessimistic- it has just been my experience, and not everyone has the same results as I have had.

First, you are not buying a car from e-bay, you are buying a car from a seller on e-bay.
E-bay uses a point system that tells you how long a seller has been on e-bay, and tells you how satisfied other users have been with dealing with this person. I would avoid any seller without feedback or any new seller.
No matter where you buy a car you have to do your homework. Inspect it personally with a trusted mechanic if you can.
If you live too far away, use carfax, and find a local mechanic, near the car, using one of the many telephone directory services available online.
Find someone near the car that will inspect the car for you for a fee.
Make sure YOU set up and provide for the shipping of the automobile.
In this world, no matter what you do, you better do your own homework. Can you get robbed on e-bay? Sure, just like you can anywhere.

The first thing I bought on E-Bay was a car. I got a great price and I still have the car 5 years later now. I have not had any problems with the car and I would buy another one, but I don't need one.

Don't buy anything you haven't seen it up close and haven't test driven there's no telling if the car runs well or not without some research. Negotiate a reasonable price look up car quotes.

No No and No. My mother works in a law firm and I cant even begin to tell you how many people have filed for lawsuits because once they bought the car it had a dirty title, was stolen and was being resold, had underlining problems or the person took off with the money and left them with nothing. Please do not do it. Try CraigsList.org instead.

I would have no problems if the car was local (or someplace where I can personally eyeball it) and I can test drive it and inspect it before bidding.

Don't buy ANY car sight unseen. Inspect it or have it inspected before laying your $$$$ down.
