If you are travelling up the coast, then Gold Beach. It's small, but there are some cute little cottages and motels there.
If you are travelling up the 5, Ashland and Medford are good bets. Lots of travellers stay around there.

it depends on what you want, but right off of the I-5 there is a town called Winston, OR that has a place called Wildlife Safari...
if you have the time, it is a really cool place. It has wild animals but they don't live in cages, they roam the park in their separate habitats. There are animals from all over the world, including some native species as well! (cheetahs, giraffes, elephants, lions, grizzly bears, gazelles, wolves, deer, birds, etc.)
this is about 140 miles south of portland, so about a 4 hour drive to portland.

Try Ashland. It's a cute little town on the border of OR and CA, on the Oregon side. There's lot of stuff to see and do there and it's in a beautiful setting.
