it's called acanthosis nigricans and the skin isn't only darker, but also has a velvety feel to it. It can be a sign of this so-called metabolic syndrome, which consists of obesity, diabetes, and high blood fats. it isn't a proof for any of these conditions though.

My Doctor was concerned because my 11 year old daughter has the same thing. It could be a sign of diabetes. Check it out to be on the safe side.
