The main function of testing and QA is to make sure your software was created correctly. This can be broken out into three categories.

Process Quality Assurance ensures processes were followed and appropriate work products created in order to ensure quality.

Verification ensures the product meets the requirements specified by the stakeholders (we built the right product).

Validation ensures the product works correctly in the environment for which is was created (we built the product right).
