I'm talking about its usage as an expression. Is it literal? or does it mean that your just facing your problems or something like that?

It means to conquer your great fears. For example, "Normally I am scared of heights but I looked the devil in the eye and scaled Mount Kilamajaro." It can also mean to confront the Devil and reject evil.

It means that the devil (or your fears or problems) have no control over you unless you let them. Look your fears or problems in the eye and they will back off (like a bully).

The "devil" is the fear, anger, greed, laziness, jealousy, egotism......that lie within all of us. See all of it down to the swirling atoms from which they are made. And see that they are made of nothing.

To me it means looking at temptation (Devil's best friend), and denying yourself of it. (Meaning you looked the devil in the eye and denied him.)

But it depends on how you view the saying...
