I have think black hair, not afro carribean. My hair is very thick and dry but it's not so much the thickness of my hair but the dryness and texture of it. I've tried loads of different intensive conditioners which don't seem to make any difference. It's dry and brittle. It feels nice and silky after i've just washed it but when it dries it goes brittle and inmanageable again. Any ideas?

At the moment I have to use gel on it to stop it looking unnatural. I would really like to stop using gel! My hair is short at the moment but I would like to grow it longer.

Try a VO5 hot oil treatment as often and you need to. Make sure you are using shampoo/conditioner that is right for your hair. If your hair is as dry as you say, you probably need to shell out the extra money for salon brand products. and make sure you trim your ends every 6 weeks, dead ends can make your hair even harder to manage.

What products have you used so far? I am 30 now and have ALWAYS tried to use the best products on my hair, since I usually bleach it blonde with highlights. Out of all the products I have ever used, Bumble & Bumble seems to be the best product out there right now. You should give it a try. I use the Gentle Shampoo and then the Deep Conditioner. I then use Bumble & Bumble's Deep Intensive Conditioner once a week by first shampooing with their shampoo and immediatly towel drying then putting the Deep Intensive Conditioner on, putting a grocery store plastic bag over my head, squeezing the air out of the bag so it's air tight, then wrapping a towel over my head and leaving it on for about a half hour or so. The heat from your head will help the deep conditioner to do it's best work ever to your hair cuticle. On all the other days I shampoo and condition like normal, then when I get out of the shower I use Infusium 23 leave in conditioner spray to detangle my hair. I never blow dry my hair, but rather let it air dry so no moisture is ever sucked out of my hair. One final note, I take all my doses of vitamins and drink as much milk as I can each day. My hair is very long, and very, very healthy looking and I believe the above rememdy might help yours to be the same as well.

You may need to fork out for salon products. You could try a leave-in conditioner. Another thing you might try is popping your conditioner in the microwave for a few seconds, the heat will allow it to penetrate your scalp. Otherwise, you could apply conditioner, soak a towel in hot water and wrap it round your head, even an hour could make a difference. You might need to use a heat-activated protection spray also.
