Tell him the truth that you can't cook but told him that to get his attention and now you would like to learn and that planning and preparing dinner together would be a good way to get to know each other better. That way you can find out info about what he likes and does not like.
Some guys away from home like that miss the preparation of meals by the family.

Get a slow cooker and you can have an easy meal!

Get 2lbs of chuck roast
1 can cream of mushroom soup cambells
1 packet of lipton onion soup mix, dry
1 celery, chopped
2 whole carrots peeled and chopped
3 whole potatoes, chopped, peeled if you want

This dish takes 6-8 hours so in the morning add this to the slow cooker:
The dry soup, the campbell's soup, 2 cans of water (use the soup can). Mix the soup til its dissolved.
Then add the beef, and then the veggies. Top the crockpot til the water barely covers the veggies.
Turn the crock pot on to medium heat. Cover and let cook for at least 6 hours. By the time dinner is ready, the food is done. Make a tossed salad and your meal is ready to go!

If you do not have a slow cooker try Chicken, Potatoes and Veggies

Get some fresh boneless chicken breasts, cut it up. Coat it with an egg/water mixture, roll in bread crumbs and bake 30 minutes at 325 degrees.

If you're real lazy, get some shake n bake type coating, and coat the fresh chicken with that mixture. Tastes just as good.

While the chicken is baking, make some fresh mashed potatoes.
If you have a microwave its super easy.
In a microwave safe bowl, add 2 potatoes, washed and cut. Peel if you wish. Poke a few holes in it with a fork.
Fill the bowl with water, put in microwave, cover with saran wrap or waxed paper, microwave on high for 8 minutes.

When the potatoes are done (fork should slide easily into it), carefully drain the water. If you do not have a potato masher, use the fork and break the potatoes down until you can mash it. Add a splash of milk, a gob of butter and a dash of salt. Mix well. For creamier potatoes, add more milk... but not too much milk or it'll turn mushy. Let the potatoes sit 5 minutes before serving.

Then for veggies, you can serve fresh veggies (ie: corn on the cob, carrots) or frozen or canned.. whichever you prefer

It's hard to just throw recipes out there, what if you have a preference? There are soo many meals that are practically done for you, go to the pasta/rice isle at the grocer's, believe it or not Hamburger Helper has a lot of easy and quick meals that all you have to do is add meat. One of my favorites is "Chicken Fried Rice", it's really good and all you add is diced chicken. Try that and just add a salad and some bread which requires no cooking. You'll have everything done in less than 40 mins.

And during dinner with hotty guy, it would be a good idea to fess up to not being an expereinced cook, make a joke of it with him, tell him you just wanted to get him to your house or something, laugh it off, I'm sure he'll laugh with you and not at you. If you want to get into cooking, the best way is to get recipes and follow the instructions - can't go wrong if you read!

Good luck!

BTW - Speghetti is not easy for a first time meal!

Spaghetti is probably the easiest in the world. You will need: box of spaghetti noodles, 1 pound of ground beef, and a jar of spaghetti sauce.(Ragu is pretty good.) Noodles will take the longest to cook, so fill a medium pot 3/4 high, bring to a boil, THEN add noodles, reduce heat. Meanwhile, brown (cook) the beef, and when cooked, strain juices out in sink. Cook the beef at around Medium heat. Check on noodles periodically, might wanna take one out to see if it tastes right. When about ready, mix beef and spaghetti sauce together on low to med heat, until hot. Beadsticks make a GREAT side item, slong with a small tossed salad or something. And don't forget the parmesan cheese for the spaghetti..GOOD LUCK!

Roast Beef: If he is in the Army , he is most likely a meat and potatoes guy. Buy a 1lb roast at grocery store. 10 hours before you want to eat put in a 200degree oven (don't worry slow cooking, plus meat will be tender). Must be in a covered iron or ceramic container. MUST BE COVERED!!! No seasoning whatsoever. Forget it. At 1 hour to go, boil 6 large potatoes (peeled and quartered) They should boil until soft. At same time Put two cans of green beans (rinsed and drained in a small pot on stove). Cover with water, add two TBL spoons of olive oil, 1 large pinch of salt. Bring to a boil then turn off burner and cover pot. 15 minutes before (2things to do).

1. Drain potatoes and put in mixing bowl, add half a stick of real butter. Salt and pepper to taste. Then use electric mixer to whip/mash potatoes. Add milk sparingly to achieve thickness that you like.
2. Gravy: Drain juices from pan that had the roast in it. This is your gravy base. Should be about 1cup or so. Do not worry about the fat, it is ok. Add 1 cup of water to it. Place in a sauce pan, bring to a roiling boil. Keep tasting add salt as you think it needs it, also you can add a beef boullion cube to strengthen beef flavor. In a cup mix 1 cup of cold water and a large heaping teaspoon of corn starch. This will thicken gravy. As the gravy is boiling add the starch water to it bit by bit. Keep watching the gravy will thicken fast. Remove from heat to control boiling action. When gravy is of good thickness pour in a gravy boat or bowl. Serve meat, green beans, mashed potatoes. Gravy on beef and potaoes. Use brown and serve rolls, and Iced Tea. Note: during last 2 hours of meat you can add onions, celery and carrots to the meat pan. Adds a little more to meal, and enhance flavor. GOOD LUCK

allrecipes.com and recipesource.com are both great websites to use for recipes.....you can read feedback to see how easy or hard it was to make, what changes were made and whether people liked it or not. And for future reference, don't pretend to be something you aren't - it will inevitably backfire. Tell him you really can't cook, and have fun learning together!
