It's the "poop" that's the problem. Also, he doesn't seem to be interested in cleaning himself anymore...

Oh the disadvantages of growing old.

Yup it's normal, however I can share a few tips for dealing with it.

Every cat has his/her favorite places to hang out. Buy some changing pads (like used in nursing homes), and place a towel over it for comfort. You can wash the towel and the mat will protect the furniture, floor, or what ever.

Invest in a one of those spray mops, great for those accidents on the kitchen or bathroom floors.

Baby wipes are great for cleaning the rear. If he is long haired, you might want to keep the area trimmed.

At this stage, he doesn't have that much more time with you. Enjoy the time you have left.

Something to think of while cleaning those little messes and thinking #$%^&*... one day it could be you that some one is cleaning up after.

Yes. Blind too. Even if not incontinent, they do it everywhere not knowing they have do it in the wrong place. But forgive it... the thing gave you years of love and companionship and now is the time for you to return some of that love. My mother's cat went through that. Mom cried for days afterwards !!!

He may be losing his sense of smell at his age. That's why he isn't cleaning himself. You will have to do it for him. Also, if his smell is going, he may not be eating as well as he once did. 20 is very old for a cat; you must have done something very right in your time with him. Love him.

Cats get old just like people... at 20, you and your pet probably don't have a long time left to enjoy each other's company. Take care of it like you would an loved elderly family member...

WOW! That is one old cat!
You should share your secret to a long healthy life for kitties!

And yes, sadly, animals (like humans) have old-age problems, too.
