Atheism means you have no religion, so it came first. But it was only after man invented religion that we knew what to call it.

Oh, I think that the Adam argument will work just fine. A lot of interesting answers along the way so far, but let's look at this from Adam's perspective.
You know God on a personal level. He talks to you everyday when the two of you go for a walk in the garden in the cool of the day. You know that He loves you above all of the other creatures of the earth for two reasons: A) He put you in charge, and B) He made for you the most beautiful creature you have ever seen to be your helper.
Adam had complete and total access to God. Nothing was hidden from Adam when it came to God's glory. Adam knew God face to face.
Adam didn't simply believe in God. He recognized God by sight, much like we rcognize our family and friends by sight.
Keep trying, Old Hippie. You'll find Him as long as you keep looking.

I honestly believe that in evolution (and I am a Christian), Adam and Eve refer to the first to discover the existence of God. They became aware of Him and thus they were given "special revelation". So with this theory, it would be safe to say that there were atheist first, but not like you would think. There were people that didn't have a belief in anything. They weren't rabid like some atheists today. But because Adam and Eve connected to a higher being than themselves they were allowed into the garden of Eden and the rest can be concluded from there.

I'm not so sure I agree with some of the answers before me. This could be a subject that we cannot really answer. I think that it falls in the same category as "What do babies dream of since they do alot of sleeping", and looking deeper, we all come from GOD directly from conception. I don't think, because we don't know, that there were no beliefs in GOD at early stages of life because the mind is truly not developed to be so sophicated to think of the development process of where we come from. But once you start to wonder, for example, how am I able to sit up from a laying position by myself. How does that really work. I certainly could not continue to think that there is no creator. But that's not to say that I did not believe there was not a creator before I wondered.
When looking at conception, an egg being fertilized by the sperm - what actually comes before that. I don't believe that conception is the very beginning. Yes, of course, the beginning of the physical/reality realm but what's beyond that?
So, humans play with words to group/categorize people for their on enjoyment in socialization to say what's the norm and what isn't. I think we don't have enough information to answer. And even if someone gave their answer, it is definitely not a confirmation of truth.
Try answering how did we (life) get here, the laws and order of the universe, and don't forget the smaller life that is undetected by the naked eye is definitely in a world of their own but also connected to our world. Who's world are we connected to? And so on and so on... What is intelligent and large enough to create all of that. Things simply just were not here for man because he wanted them here. Life - man can not create without a plan in place. And even with that plan, man still needed help in sustaining that life.
For someone to tell me that there is no GOD, I could tell them they don't know it all because by saying that means they haven't thought it through all the way and that they are simply taking the easy way out and very egotistical to think that they can do it all without GOD. But sometime in their life - they will realize where they went wrong. Hopefully!
And I have no religion.

Early humans had no concept of god.
Humans from evolution have been and still are afearing species, like any other living species on this planet. The fear of survival in medieval times has continued till date, albeit many more colours are now added to that fear.
Faith in god or person or place or event - all followed as soother for mind, soul.
Thus, it can be construed that it was the non-believers in god who came first, so to answer your question.

You know, I sat for a good four or five minutes trying to think of an answer. I can't even think of a sarcastic remark.
Maybe we could see if Whoopi Goldberg can attend and be the medium for a seance. She has done it before, if she can't contact god successfully, then I'll be satisfied with second best, Patrick Swayze. Would not be time wasted after all. (GHOST

God loves old hippies, I was a part of the Jesus movement way back then. The believers in God came first, the term Christian came after Jesus was sacrificed for us on the earth. In the old testament days they had Moses and the Prophets to guide them to God.

Believe it or not, everyone on earth was at some time an atheist. When you are born you do not know that there can or can't be a god. It is then taught to you as you grow up.
The smart ones reject what they are taught and realize that the knowledge they were born with was right!
Good question.

That's kind of a "Which came first, the chicken or the egg" question. They say you need as much faith to be an atheist as you do a "Believer",(remember, christian, they aren't just not believing in your God,they don't believe in any god or goddess,in thesingular or plural, they don't believe in spirit, they don't believe there is a soul, period.)So,technically,I'd say the atheist came first, evolutionarily, because early hominids didn't have time to worry about an afterlife, they were too busy not being dinner. As humans evolved to advanced life-forms,then they had time to worry about such.I'd like to propose that belief in god came with the discovery of, and control of, fire. What more mystical thing is there in the natural world, and to have the ability to create and control it?Especially since it so difficult to make with primitive tools, surely that was the first prayer,"Come Fire...rub,rub..come fire,...rub,rub."

Well, people are not born with a belief system, there is no way for you to believe in God at birth, all of that is taught. So, if you have no belief in God when you're born, you're an Atheist, which would mean that Atheists came first, regardless.

Early humans appeared to have simple death rituals and "worshipped" parts of nature like animals, plants, rain, mountains, and the earth. Then buddhism was founded, the first of the existing religions. After that polytheism emerged, and was very widespread, and finally after that came monotheistic religions such as christianity and Islam.
