My husband had a teacher who spoke dozens of languages. I don't know the exact number (and I don't think he does, either). He learned new languages very easily. Supposedly, when he died, the total number of languages spoken by all teachers together at his university dropped by 50%!

Careful with this question for an accurate answer as people tend to exaggerate.
I for instance speak English with fluency, French & Spanish at a conversational level and have a very basic understanding of German so I say that I speak 3 languages.
I also understand the gist of Portuguese and some Italian due to their relationship with French & Spanish.
Other people also count dialects. For instance I speak Quebecois French and Parisienne French but I count them as 1 language.

Once I heard, - don't know if its true or not - that a cardinal at the Vatican knew fluently 52 languages, without ever been out of Rome, and the most difficult language was Chinese to learn, it took him 6 months.
