Costly gifts, to be sure, but not enough to make someone rich. Oddly enough, I've heard this question posed before in a book in a book I read some years ago called Twenty and Ten. The answer suggested there seems to me to be the most likely. Where did all the money go? First, you have to pay for the trip to Bethlehem. Next, you have the flight into Egypt where the family stayed for several years. Joseph left his home (probably without taking most of his savings with him) and his job to go settle into an already established community (replete with carpenters) where the people did not speak his language. Probably took a while to get a business going that would pay enough to support the family. Then, after Egypt, they all went back to Nazareth. Well what happened to the original home and the business and money while they were in Egypt? Certainly someone else took over the work. Maybe the house got sold. The money was probably used by family. Now Joseph has to start over, buy a new place to live, and win his clientel back. Finally, just when things are settling down again, they decide to make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem. This is no small affair. There's a big caravan and they spend several days in the city, which has never been noted for its inexpensiveness. Then they lose Jesus, so they can't even head back with the rest of the caravan, but have to stay in the city longer and either wait for the next one or attempt the trip on their own, which would be dangerous for such a small party. At any rate, the holy family had to deal with a lot of expenses that the average family didn't, so it was a good thing the magi came along when they did. The money from the gifts was probably used up long before Jesus reached adulthood, since it was necessary to make ends meet. Jesus and his family were therefore almost certainly never rich, but rather just able to get along with what they had.

Jesus wasn't rich. He was from Nazareth and the son of a carpenter. He didn't live the life of a person of privilidge, in fact He had to deal with people attaching the stigma of illegitimacy to Him. However, the Bible says that Jesus kept "increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men." (1)

The gifts were God's way of taking care of His only Son and the family that raised Him. The Bible does not say that Jesus lived a life of ease. His earthly father, Joseph, was a man of trade and worked for a living. Jesus would have been expected to learn that trade and continue it. The culture of the day dictated this. They also lived in the Galilee region which was made up mostly of fishermen and people of lower class status.

God is rich far beyond what you can imagine. In fact, in the Bible God states that the things of this earth that we give great value to have no value in heaven. Gold is so devalued that it's used like asphalt to pave the streets. His wealth is far greater than we can comprehend because the most precious thing, the one thing He holds of the utmost value is you and me.

Jesus wasn't rich He took the humility of servant hood. remember He said " foxes have hole birds have nests but the son of man has no place to rest His head". Why would He sent away the rich man to sell all his goods to follow Him when He was walking around rich himself. It was to make him see money is not a top priority God was. Peter said Lord we have left ALL to follow you, almost all the disciples where wealthy men. If money was a part of the message Christ would have told them keep your money follow me. Judas was in charge of alms giving which was as they received money to distribute it to the poor. These prosperity teachings are wrong .
1Ti 6:5-10 Perverse disputing of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.......
Creflo Dollar,Kenneth Copland and the like say Jesus was rich twist the word of God for self serving purposes. Telling you to go after riches is OK as long as you give tithes. Study your word and see what Christ taught.... store up your treasures in heaven.... where your treasure is there your heart will be also.

The Bible did not say that Jesus was rich with earthly riches.

Mat 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
Mat 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Mat 4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
Mat 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Mat 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Mat 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
Mat 4:9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
Mat 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Mat 4:11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Joh 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
