Among the human race, there is Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, each with a billion adherents, give or take, plus loads of other smaller religions. How does anyone know theirs is right, since that would make 5 BILLION other people wrong?

And, please don't just answer "faith" but rather explain why you have faith in one religion and not another.

Lots of great answers-- thanks! But I would like to refocus what I mean by the question. If one is deeply committed to a belief system (Christianity, Islam, etc) I would think there must be some "epistemological" grounding. In other words, how do we know what we know?

It is one thing to say that we must look in the Bible to find whether a religion is true or not. But how do we know that we ought not to look in the Bible, and not the Koran, or Bhagavad Gita?

I know that you are looking for an answer to this question, perhaps you should ask yourself that same question. We could give you the answers you might want to here and might not want to hear but the truth is right there in your face and that is we all in our religions believe in God. We believe in him so strongly that we know that things and problems that have plagued our lives will be resolved through him.

I don't have to confess my faith to you because as I speak to you you already know deep down inside your heart which is why you wanted to see how many would really answer this question. The reason I didn't skip this question is for two reasons:

1. Where I was and where I been was a journey for me and it took my faith and belief in God to pull me out of some terrific storms in my life.

2. From having been married, having strong healthy children, a loving family who I know loves me very much and most of all helping me cope with all the pain I felt when I lost my closest friend my mother. God was right with me throughout all of those trials and he continues to be with me.

God has been faithfull to me because everytime I asked for something important, he has came through for me even when I do something that is not what he wanted he waited for me to ask for forgiveness and he knew by my faith he wouldn't turn me away.

God said he wouldn't leave not one behind and so far none of my family with the exception of my mother's death we haven't lost anyone else, so that is why I believe in God so strongly and so faithfully because he has been faithfully there for me and I know this with every string of hair on my head.

So that you asked this question my faith which you don't want to hear about does drive me forward to where I need to go in this life and that same faith is going to see me through more of my trials and tribulations as a test of what my heart has in it.

You question peoples faith in whatever religion, my question to you my child is what do you believe in and why is there so much doubt that I sense from you when you wrote this question?

My answer to you is go and study and learn for yourself what God has done and search your heart and see what else you can find. Perhaps you will find something that you need to answer yourself.

Be one with God and have peace with the journey you seek.

YOU must spend time to do some re-search by reading every religion.

This is the very reason why GOD given is us brain to think and to search. You must leave the worldly materialistic things aside like watching movies and listening to musics and try spend time in reading and attending and watch what people say. Eventually you will be guided to the true path.

Forget about the things people talk religions create war etc. Religion is not the only source for war, it is colour, race and may more but one thing one should remember whatever happens in this earth whether we like it or not the thing will happen war, poverty, natural disasters these are according to the plans of GOD so we live here on temporary basis and we must make use of this time to spend our time to do the research.

Well from my experience if you speak to a Muslim he wouldn't say all religion are the same and it is man made thing or give you an unstable answer. But all other believers would say as you could see, most waste their time doing mockery.

Try reading this and experience how people converted to Islam and why.

Jesus said at Matt.7:13,14-"Go in through the narrow gate, because broad and spacious is the road leading off into destruction and MANY are the ones going in through it,whereas narrow the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it."
Jesus points out there the majority are on the wrong road.
Jesus also said at Matt.7:15-20 showed that true religion can be identified by 'truth' and 'fruitage'.
It is up to each of us to search for the truth of God's Holy Word and to ensure what we are being taught is also from God's Word.
As one of Jehovah's Witnesses,I know that this is the true religion.Jehovah's Witnesses have Gods Holy Spirit working upon the organisation.Jehovah's people not only study Gods Word,it is a part of our lives. We are witnesses of Jehovah all day every day and try to the best of our ability to reflect our Creators qualities and to do His will, which is to preach the good news of the kingdom before the end comes -Matt.24:14.

I might just add that I used to be a catholic but like the religious leaders of Jesus' day,I too saw the hypocrisy and lies the priests were churning out.Jesus said of his day that they(religious leaders)had made the word of God invalid by their traditions...So too I found with the Catholic Church. What they taught were pagan teachings fused in with Christian teachings whilst others were man made doctrines that were not found in the Bible.

Did you know that "Paul" persecuted and killed many Christians for years? Did you know that he made a 360 turn around and died for the word of Christ? Did you know all of Jesus' disciples were 'chickens' before Jesus' death. After, they all traveled and were killed(except for John) for standing up for Christianity? Something out of the ordinary happened to all these men. Something that psychology cannot explain. You figure it out.

I'm not saying that Christians or Catholics or Protestants, etc. are it, but as long as you firmly believe and follow the correct path of loving others and loving G--, you will get to the same place. Judaism, Islamic, Hinduism share very similar roots. If they follow just the simple principles, they are great religions.

Jesus said, "why do you hold man's laws dear, but deny your Father's" And "you will be judged according to your works"

It's all about the relationship you have with G-- or Jesus.

I myself know because I SAW JESUS, NOT G-- AND I HAVE FELT IT EVER SINCE. HE NEVER LEAVES YOU ONCE YOU FEEL HIM.

“HOW am I to know for sure that my religion is the true one?” you may ask. “There are hundreds of different religions, and each one claims to be true. I don’t have time to study every religion.”

Is that the way you feel? It is understandable that you may. However, since the many different religions teach conflicting doctrines, it is obvious that not all of them can be true.

The Bible, too, indicates this, for it speaks of “one faith,” and encourages: “Keep testing whether you are in the faith, keep proving what you yourselves are.” (Eph. 4:5; 2 Cor. 13:5) The Bible also warns about being misled by false ministers, who “keep transforming themselves into ministers of righteousness.” (2 Cor. 11:14, 15) Jesus Christ himself said that many persons would be misled into taking the broad road to destruction, and so warned: “Be on the watch for the false prophets.”—Matt. 7:13-15.

It is natural that you should desire not to be misled. But how can you avoid it? How can you know for sure that your religion is the true one? It can be done by finding out whether its teachings are supported by God’s Word, which Jesus said is the truth. (John 17:17) Also by determining the kind of fruitage the religion produces. Fine, wholesome fruitage is an indication that the religion is the true one, whereas bad fruitage is an indication that it is false.—Matt. 7:16-23.

So the test is a relatively easy one to make. If a religion is not in accord with what the Bible teaches, then it is not in harmony with truth. It is not the true religion. (Rom. 3:4) You have nothing to fear in examining your beliefs by the standard of God’s Word, for if you have the true religion you can only be reassured. And if what you believe is not in keeping with the Bible, then you should welcome the truth, because it leads to eternal life.—John 17:3.

MAKING THE TEST

Following are a few questions that should help you to see whether your religion adheres to the Bible. Answer the inquiries as you read them. Then ponder what the Bible has to say. If yours is the true religion it will be in harmony with the Bible. Since the King James Version is perhaps the Bible most commonly used in English-speaking countries, all references will be from it in making this doctrinal test, though you will find the same truth in any other Bible translation.

First, does your religion teach the “Trinity” doctrine, which claims that Almighty God and Jesus Christ and the holy spirit are three persons combined to make one God? Does it say that the Son, Jesus Christ, is coeternal and coequal with the Father, Jehovah God?

Now consider what the Bible says on this matter: “There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Tim. 2:5) Thus, God is one person, and Jesus is no part of God but is the mediator between God and man. Jesus, too, said: “Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord.” (Mark 12:29) And of himself Jesus said: “I am the Son of God.” (John 10:36; see also Luke 1:32.) So rather than Jesus’ being God or a part of God, the Bible speaks of him as the Son of God.

Are Jehovah God and Christ Jesus coeternal, as the “Trinity” doctrine claims? Of Jehovah the Bible says: “From everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” Also, it calls him “the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity.” (Ps. 90:2; Isa. 57:15) Hence he was not born, was not created; he had no beginning. But note that the Bible calls Jesus Christ “the firstborn of every creature,” and “the beginning of the creation of God.”—Col. 1:15; Rev. 3:14.

i believe my religion is the true gosple. i've gained this testimony by feeling the spirit, by testing my faith in what i believe, and by visiting other church's meetings. the same feeling of peace and full understanding i got at my church was absent when i went to others. no offense to the others, i agree with somethings of what they say but not all and in my view they leave so much understanding too be desired. i hope that you wont settle for anything less than what you desire in a religion, good luck on your hunt. i love my Heavenly Father and i would die rather that deny what i know in my heart to be true.when i came to discover this fact, that is when i felt my testimony grow. i think that alot of religions have the light of Christ to a degree, however i personally believe that only one is fully true withcorrect principles. i hope this helps a little. :) ~ e_thomas

The only thing that makes a religion a "True" religion is the perceptions of the people practicing it. Therefore, there is no true religion.

As for my religion, it is the right spiritual path for me. Each path is unique and individual no matter the religion. There is no wrong path to take to spirituality, just different ones.

I think all the religions contain truth insofar as they emphasize things like love, compassion, forgiveness etc. The parts of a religion that encourage hatred and violence are negative or false. I think that it's up to the individual to decide in what way to honour God. If you happen to be born into a Christian home, you will probably decide to worship God through Jesus. If you happen to be born in a Muslim home, you will call God Allah etc. But I doubt God is picky about the name, nor should we be.

People don't KNOW. I think that most of them were brainwashed into the beleif from a young age, and so now cannot let go of that idea. Others who were older before choosing a religion seem to NEED something to believe in, because they do not feel their life is fulfilled without it.
