Revealing tops are fine. Your outfit should look dressier than just jeans and a tank top-not fancy, but classier, like you put though into it. Also, the most revealing thing is accessories-shoes and bags, purses. Italians never wear ugly, bulky tennis shoes or flip flops (unless they're on the beach) and usually know from the moment they see an American by their shoes, badly coiffed hair, and tacky bags. Some brands in the US for shoes that pass for Italian are puma, and squared. Polo is very popular as well, for clothing.

First of all...why would you avoid to look like an American? Are you or are you not an American ? And if you are...what is wrong to look like one ? Do you know that the Italian boys admire the Americans girls ???
The Italian girls ( i mean the young ) imitate our teenagers
in clothing...and use as many English words they can master...Anything AMERICAN works just fine in Italy.. Music, singers, movies, hamburgers and coca cola...So,if you do not wish to look American....then dress like one and you will notice that you look like one of them....same jeans....same tops but different sandals...unless you like those very high hills and walk bending your knees...I know, I am Italian/American and I I go see my family there every other year.

Avoid white athletic shoes and levi style jeans. Avoid fanny packs. Avoid consulting a map in public. Avoid US sports labels. Be nice to everyone and don't 'expect' them to speak English.

Don't wear shorts, wear capris or long pants. Really revealing tops will get you some interesting stares from the locals.
