I'm sort of in the same situation. Be as polite as possible, and if you feel uncomfortable saying it in person or via a telephone conversation then just send her a text.

I would say something along the lines of, "Hey I was just wondering about that money you owed me, I'm having some financial trouble this month if you could at least throw me a few bucks it would definitely help. Thanks."

That way your not being rude or demanding the money, and if she knows that your having some money troubles (whether you are or not) she may be more inclined to pay up.

Good luck!

It will get to the point where she will say it was a gift and doesn't have to pay you back. Unless you have a signed written understanding that the money was a form of loan you are pretty much up a creek. You will end up having to drag her butt into court and the judge will ask you, and you will say it is a loan, then the judge will ask her and she will say it is a gift, so then the judge will ask you if you have any signed paper and of course you will say no. End of story.

There is no point in being nice. Nice doesn't cut the mustard. You can beg and grovel all you want and she will just laugh at you. The only way she will know you are serious is if you wring her scrawny neck, and then she will own your house, too.

Call her ask her how she is doing. Then say "I wouldn't ask if I didn't need it. I was wondering if you have the money you owe me."
