-Set of pens
-Brief case/attahce`
-Daily planner
-One day seminar on "job succes" or something of that nature
-New busines suit/outfit (if it is your wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend)

Whatever gift you give them make it personal and a "close" gift...one that they will use, carry, wear etc....Avoid gifts they they have to "move" into the office. A new employee should avoid bringing in boxes of personal items in on the first day of work, it is very unprofessional and everyone will think "Hmm, guess they will be decorating the office all day." Pictures, plants, etc should come later...after all, it is their office, they will want to personalize the space, but this is inappropriate for the first day.

I suggest "decor" items as an work/job anniversary gift.

Good luck.

depends on the type of job. A new tie, a briefcase, a business card holder, pen and pencil set. Those are good for someone starting in business.

if you are willing to splurge, a palm pilot is a great gift! it helps keep meetings and stuff organized! also, you could take them out to eat after the first day on the job!

(Hi, M T) I would make a gift bag of office supplies, maybe even a gift card from Office Basics or Office Depot, maybe even a day-timer organizer.

How about a gift certificate from Office Depot for them to get desk supplies?

A bottle of wine to celebrate? However don't do this if he/she works in a place where it is illegal to do this.

Take them to dinner to celebrate.

a picture frame
a funny magnet for their filing cabinet

if they don't have an office, a really nice pen or pencil set
a key chain for their toilet key
a fob with a wire pully extension -- (i don't know what they are called, but you clip your building pass and toilet key to it and then clip it to your belt. the pully lets you use the key & pass w/o unclipping from belt.)

A box of chocolates, a plaque, a home-made card, and a bouquet of roses.
