It is always a good idea to confirm the ticket. It's not so much that the airline would cancel your ticket, but they could have changed flight times or something. So, you arrive for your flight at 4 in the afternoon and discover the plane left at noon. So it just a good idea to call and check a day or two ahead.

I dont know what airline daddydjx2 worked for, but he is wrong. If your return was booked several months ago, always check your reservation with the airline. Confirm the flight number and times are still the same. That information changes seasonally and with or without notice, so either go online to their website and look up your reservation or call them directly. Any company will be happy to confirm the schedule with you. You aren't asking for specifics like who will be sitting beside you, but you need to verify the information is still accurate. Sometimes the departure time can change from 10 minutes to several hours in difference than when you initially purchased the ticket.
Most International airlines are still on paper tickets, so you may or may not be able to pull up your reservation online. If you are on paper stock, in the upper middle portion of the ticket will be a record locator, usual some letters and a number or two, it's 6 characters usually. Or the ticket number is located at the bottom of the ticket in the middle portion. That is what you will need to refer to when speaking to reservations.
The only way your booking would be cancelled is if you dont show up for one of the segments. If your flights change for any reason, it will be updated in your record. There have been freak instances when the reservation was dropped from the system, but the airline is able to pull it back up by using the ticket number, so make sure you have a printed itinerary on hand if you are not on a paper ticket.
Always be prepared, always follow up especially if the reservation was made several months ago. And never second guess. They would rather you call and ask than to show up thinking your flight had not changed and you were not informed.

I would check in at least 24 hours before you depart. They may have been a schedule change or something and you wouldn't want to miss your flight.

You should call the airline to confirm your ticket, you would not like to have a surprise when you get to the airport.

It doesn't hurt to check with them a day or two before the flight. They can let you know about any delays or schedule changes.

Always double check just to be sure. You never know what gremlins are running around an airline's computer system :-)
