The cold setting is used to set a style in place. When your using a round brush to curl or straighten hair out using the blow dryer with heat, go over it again with the cold setting and it with keep the curl in place. It works wonders if used properly.

when you want to style the hair you use the hot air. When hairdryers don't have the "cold" setting the hairdresser will most likely hold the brush there for some secs and then let go so that when the hair gets back to normal temp. it keeps the new shape. Cold air makes it quicker. You don't have to wait till the hair naturally gets back to normal temp, you actually get to speed the process. ;)

The hot air is for drying your hair. The cold setting is for setting the hair in place.

The burst of cold air usually closes the hair follicle, protecting it and also giving your hair a little shine. A final rinse in cold water has the same effect, if you're not blow drying that day.

the cooler air (as it's not really cold) helps smooth the cuticle of the hair down, so it's not as frizzy. It also helps to lock in a curl if heat was used to put the curl in.

heat damages your hair...
by using the cold setting, it smoothes/closes the cuticle down... thus -- your hair looks shinier...
I usually dry the hair 95% w/ the hot air.. then smooth down w/ cool air at the end.

I have curly hair and after I've blow dried and I want to "set" the curls, I switch to cool or cold, when the curls are warm, they have a tendency to droop. When they're cool, they are more firm.

I use mine on the cool setting to blow up my inflatable air bed when I have visitors. It works great! I think that was way the manufactures put a cool setting!!!
