Mac (often abbriviated to Mc) means "son" or "son of" in Scots Gaelic. The equivalent in Irish Gaelic is O' (as in O'Connor or O'Reilly). So MacDonald is the son of Donald.

Well, "mac" means son in the area this surnames originate.

Nowadays, McXXX are common surnames without any special meaning, specially known on the British and Irish islands and in countries with a numerous population with that immigration background.

So "McDonald" is a very common surname like "Miller" or "Clinton" or whatsoever.

It is indeed 'Son of Donald' - and is the Clan name of the Donald Clan, all of whom originate from the Isle of Skye, just off the western coast of Scotland. Every McDonald on earth can trace his or her ancestry back to the Isle of Skye.
