My best suggestion is to visit www.craigslist.org, then click on your local area. Search through the classifieds there. It's super easy to use, and it's local! (Regardless of where you live) Granted, they don't have small outlying cities, but most major metropolitan areas are covered. Good luck!

If you want a serious bike then check out the small ads in Cycling Weekly, otherwise, check out Loot. Use of a search engine should throw up on-line ads.
For general advice on second hand bikes, see answer to Vagrant's question in cycling section of answers.

check out some of the cycling magazines. Which magazine depends on what type of bike you want. There are always personal adds in the back.
Good luck

Is there a cash generator/converters near you. Try there, reasonable prices.
